THE GROUND WE SHARE
Our Neighborhood Story on the TEDx Stage
|
|
This holiday season, we're thankful to all the artists, volunteers, and donors who gathered around the vision of Art on Sedgwick to help bring it to life -- and for the opportunity to share our story on December 7 at TEDxWilmetteWomen. The live audience was inspired by our work -- and the video of our founder Charlie Robinson Branda's presentation will be available on the TED website in early 2020. We'll share the link then!

HANNAH DYKSTRA
Hannah Dykstra is an artist, illustrator, teacher, and the programming & communications manager at Art on Sedgwick. She is currently working on a graphic novel about the composer Dmitri Shostakovich and his experience in Stalinist Russia. The book explores censorship, authenticity, and the connection between public and private ways of being.

In my trip to Saint Petersburg, Russia this December, I was able to walk the streets of the book's location and do research at the Shostakovich Archive. Because the book takes place before WWII, I was unable to attain some information because of damage done to Saint Petersburg (Leningrad) during the siege. I also happened to stay with a family whose relatives were survivors from the city. Because of this history, the desire for peace was a common thread in our conversation, and I will always remember that - that was the flavor of my time there.
