Welcome to the new grads of my recent MBSR classes. FYI, the primary function of this newsletter is to remind you--and me--to continue practicing. That is the intention behind the reminder if it is available to you, Pause and ‘drop-in’ at the top of every issue. In addition to this reminder, this newsletter lists upcoming mindfulness offerings so that you can continue to practice with a group and to be in community with others who are also practicing mindfulness and living more healthful lives. The words of wisdumb, inner inmate cleverisms and informational aspects of the newsletter are secondary.
With this in mind then, I would like to detail the upcoming A Mindful South Florida event that I am organizing and co-hosting with Valerie York-Zimmerman. For those that do not know Valerie, she is a UMass Certified MBSR teacher and USCD MBSR teacher trainer who is, as far as I know, the person that has been teaching MBSR the longest in South Florida. Valerie and I first came together a few years ago with the idea to co-teach workshops. We have 30+ years of teaching and 50+ years of practicing mindfulness between us. I say this not for oohh's & aahh's or praise or accolades, but to highlight our devotion and commitment to mindfulness…and to our community since all our work is local. But instead of offering a simple workshop, we decided on the current “big” mindfulness weekend. The specific intention behind this event is to present what mindfulness has to offer for mental health and to raise awareness and reduce the stigma around mental illness, given the issues we are confronting and grappling with daily – opioid crisis and addiction, rising rates of anxiety, depression and suicides, school trauma, mass shootings, and criminal justice system’s dealing with persons with mental health issues.
However, another intention of the event is to bring together the mindfulness community of the Tri-County area. Hence there are workshops from Jupiter to South Miami. Also, we are inviting and encouraging people who have had little or no experience with mindfulness to attend the events to broaden the exposure and reach of mindfulness in the hopes of strengthening the well-being of our entire community.
Thank You to all that have signed up so far. Seats are still available for the main symposium and there is plenty of space for the seven workshops. I hope you consider attending one or more of the offerings in support of our coming together with the common intention to learn about and practice mindfulness for the betterment of our community. Valerie and I are doing our best to make this a diverse and inclusive affair. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, the main symposium at the Biltmore Hotel is free, and the workshops are offered for a low fee (plus we have several full scholarships) so that no one that is interested in, thinks they may benefit from, and/or is supportive of mindfulness is left out. All who want to can attend.

Judson Brewer, M.D., Ph.D., psychiatrist, neuroscientist, internationally known expert and researcher in behavior and mindfulness training for addictions of all kinds. Jud is the Director of Research and Innovation at Brown University’s Mindfulness Center.
Patricia (Tish) Jennings, M.Ed., Ph.D., Professor at the Curry School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia, is an internationally recognized leader in the fields of social and emotional learning and mindfulness in education.
Judge Steve Leifman, Associate Administrative Judge for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida in Miami Dade County and Chair of the Board of the South Florida Behavioral Health Network. He has been at the forefront of a national movement to decriminalize mental illness which puts defendants with mental illness into community-based treatment.
