Hello, Lean In Community!

Can you believe we are entering a new decade in less than two months? Before you start thinking about your New Year's resolutions, let us think about all the achievements you have made this year. Did you meet all your 2019 resolutions? What would you like 2020 to look like? These are some of the questions we can ask while wrapping up the year strong.

On our side, our Lean In Career Programme (LICP) 4.0 has come to an end with the LICP Finale on the 19th of October. We would like to congratulate all 19 participants who completed the 9-week programme with some successfully scored jobs and others are ready to relaunch their career back to the workforce! We would also like to congratulate our Best Speakers — our 1st prize winner, Siti Noorhana Saidin, and runner up, Chin Choon Yeen. A huge thank you to our sponsors, partners, mentors, and judges — the LICP Programme would not have been possible without your support.

Now, to end the year strong, we're bringing back our end-of-year flagship event, the Lean In UnConference! Happening on the 30th of November, this year's event is themed "Experiencing Breakthrough: Hear It, See It, Be It".

Preparations are currently in full-swing to create an event where you can see, hear, and experience breakthroughs. Our goal is to create a platform where you and our key speakers can discuss issues and challenges we face when it comes to breaking through the workforce, while sticking to Lean In Malaysia's core values of Educate, Enable, and Empower. We are very excited to end the year strong with you all so do follow us on social media for event updates and registration details!

With love,

This year’s Lean In Career Programme 4.0 – Career Comeback Edition took our nineteen mentees on a nine-week journey, with four Masterclasses, three Networking Sessions and one-to-one mentoring with experienced senior leaders from a range of industries. Their journey culminated in a Finale where each mentee was given an opportunity to pitch to an audience of recruiters, HR representatives and hiring managers. Their pitches were judged by Dato' Chang Khim Wah (President & CEO, EcoWorld Development Group), Karel Avni Doshi (Country Head of Corporate Banking, Commercial Banking, HSBC Malaysia) and our very own Abir Abdul Rahim (Co-Founder & Director, Lean In Malaysia). At the end of a long day of pitching, fielding questions and the judges’ deliberation, we are very proud of our two winners. Congratulations to Siti Noorhana Saidin for winning Best Speaker and Chin Choon-Yeen for walking away with Best Speaker (Runner-Up)!

Since the programme began, our mentees have prepared themselves to return to work through various efforts including applying their learning at workshops in daily life, developing themselves with the support of their mentors and fellow cohort, attending interviews, and getting themselves certified in various areas of industry. We are pleased to note that 50% of the cohort have returned to work or secured job offers or short term contracts, and 22% have received work experience in these three short months. We are certain this number will continue to grow in the coming months, and we will keep the LIM community posted on developments!

Watching their transformation has been a truly humbling experience, and we are so proud of what they have already achieved in such a short amount of time, and are excited to see what comes next.

#HereToHear: Ecoworld Para Counsellors

Being a people-centric organisation committed to creating a caring environment for its customers, community, as well as Team EcoWorld, EcoWorld’s employee wellness campaign Pink Possible has for many years run a wide variety of programmes and initiatives to encourage healthy living among employees across all generations. These include Health Awareness Day, free medical checks, collaborations with healthcare providers on accessible and subsidized medicare options, healthy cooking classes, and even gamifying fitness with the Global Challenge.

To further enhance the employee experience, the Pink Possible scope has now been expanded to incorporate what is arguably the most key factor to holistic health: wellness of the mind. Under Incrementality, a 12-month campaign aimed at cultivating small, consistent, and incremental changes in 3 stages (Reflect, Reunite, Reconnect) to encourage self-love and togetherness, comes the Para Counselling initiative.

Recognizing that the daily pressures of a fast-paced lifestyle, whether personal or professional, gives rise to various mental health issues like stress, anxiety, and depression, 44 leaders of Team EcoWorld have undergone 3 months of intensive training, workshops, and assignments to emerge as Para Counsellors to offer mental and emotional support to the diverse workforce that is Team EcoWorld. Comprising men and women from different job functions across all 3 operational regions of EcoWorld (Penang, Klang Valley, and Johor), these 44 leaders are only the first wave of Para Counsellors with more to come- they serve as mental first-aiders to Team EcoWorld, to lend a listening ear, advice, and support to the EcoWorld family, anywhere, anytime.

This October, our first batch of Para Counsellors celebrated their graduation with some fun activities at Eco Sanctuary. It was a chaotic afternoon as they were grouped into teams to embark on a scavenger hunt around Sanctuary Mall, performing tasks with meaningful messages about the human connection such as expressing thanks to a security guard, buying ice cream for a stranger, taking some time out to de-stress with yoga, and passing on encouraging thoughts about their team-mates.

After having a blast running around Sanctuary Mall, the Para Counsellors were pumped for their final assignment- presenting their innovative ideas on employee engagement and appreciation to the panel comprising President & CEO Dato’ Chang Khim Wah, Executive Director Dato’ Voon Tin Yow, and professional psychologist Dr. Lennie Soo- all three whom have been with the Para Counsellors’ journey every step of the way.

The Para Counsellors offered great insights and proposals on initiatives to better connect with Team EcoWorld emotionally, and following the presentations, participants had a heartfelt sharing on their 3-month journey. A job well done to Team Big Sixers and Team P.A.T. for winning the scavenger hunt and best presentation award respectively!

The graduation closed with each Para Counsellor receiving a brand new EcoWorld name badge, but not in the signature green design- encircled in a pink border, these name badges bear the line #HereToHear, for Team EcoWorld to easily identify Para Counsellors!

Team EcoWorld aspires to carve out a more prominent place for mental wellness under the Pink Possible umbrella that will endure all generations, through co-creation and collaboration to improve existing initiatives and introduce new effective programmes- the Para Counselling initiative is just the beginning!
