NZ First scandal: fixing party funding

NZ First scandal: fixing party funding

Dear all,

Yesterday news broke of something that would be – if substantiated – one of the most concerning recent developments in New Zealand politics: the existence of a secretive foundation apparently channelling undisclosed donations to the New Zealand First party.

Electoral reform experts are united in describing this story as extremely concerning. For me, it just strengthens the long-standing need for drastic reform of political party funding (and openness). Today I've penned a piece for the Guardian outlining two much-needed reforms. Change simply must happen, for its own sake and to ensure that our reputation for transparency is actually deserved.

Elsewhere, good news: I have been awarded the 2020 JD Stout Fellowship to do further work on wealth inequality, in particular the long-run effects of large wealth divides in damaging social cohesion and creating profoundly different opportunities and experiences for different groups. I've also been working on proposals for a net wealth tax in New Zealand, which should see the light of day shortly.

Regards,

MY BOOKS AND RESEARCH

My new book examines what a renewal of government might look like in the 21st century. Details about the project are here.

Previously, I've edited Inequality: A New Zealand Crisis (published by BWB), which examines the explosion in the rich-poor divide during the last 30 years, its effects on our society, and how it might be reversed.

BWB has also published The Inequality Debate: An Introduction, drawn from the opening chapters of the above and Wealth and New Zealand, which extends the story to look at inequalities of wealth and power.
