While hundreds of books have been written on Yellowstone National Park, little has ever been written on the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area...

Jesse Logan, a retired Forest Service entomologist, professor, and board member of the ABWF, and Traute Parrie, former Beartooth District Ranger and one of the co-founders of the ABWF, decided to change that.  They developed the idea of book on the A-B that appeals to the reader on a variety of levels, and then took it to heart and ran with it!  The two of them in their retirement had found a project that would grab hold of them tightly for the next three years.  Traute and Jesse both serve as editors of this incredible compilation, having contacted all of the artists herein and chosen the essays and artwork within, written for, while poring over its content and look.  Additionally, Jesse, Wally McFarlane and a team they assembled created the many maps that focus the geography onto the essays here.  Traute additionally did the lion’s share of the fundraising needed to make the production of this work a reality.

About the 'Atlas'

The book that came of Traute's and Jesse's herculean efforts is a new work of essays and artwork that’s truly a monument to their tenacity and creativity—a love story about the A-B Wilderness. “Voices of Yellowstone’s Capstone: A Narrative Atlas of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness” is a personal, scholarly, and beautiful book, that took advantage of the abundance of outstanding writers and artists in our region.  Built around captivating maps of the wilderness area (hence our nickname, ‘Atlas’), and adorned with art and photography inspired by the natural beauty of the region, these essays reveal many facets of one of the largest and most spectacular wilderness areas in the world.

Authors and scientists from around the region for whom the A-B Wilderness holds special meaning wrote about various topics integral to the A-B.  All written works as well as all the artwork and photography were submitted as generous contributions to the ‘Atlas’ Project. You will find in the 32 essays here, topics on glaciers, Crow (Apsaalooke) history, pikas, whitebark pine, Yellowstone cutthroats, mountain climbing, and many others.

The book is available NOW on the ABWF’s website and will at various bookstores and outlets around the region!  The ‘Atlas’ of the A-B Wilderness (338 pp. 9” x 12” softcover--$45) can be purchased at our online store at
www.ABWilderness.org.

Voices of Yellowstone’s Capstone: A Narrative Atlas of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness” is a self-published work by Traute Parrie, Jesse Logan and the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Foundation.  Scott McMillion (of Montana Quarterly magazine) was a consulting editor, and Adrienne Pollard served as the book designer.

All proceeds from sales of the ‘Atlas’ benefit the ABWF and therefore this amazing wilderness!
