The future of accessible sport looks bright! There are currently over 8000 different sports being played across the world, which can be adapted for all abilities, locations and equipment - the question is... where to start!

The theme of the upcoming International Day of People with Disabilities is 'The Future is Accessible'. We totally agree, and this week we are highlighting three unique and emerging activities to prove it!

Adaptive Climbing, ParaDance, and Power 2 Pedal - grab a cuppa, get comfy, and read on to find out more...

Love Sport? Let's learn about... Adaptive Climbing

Adaptive Climbing Victoria

Rock climbing can be adapted in a number of ways for people with a broad range of physical abilities including blindness, deafness, limb difference or amputations, neurological conditions, and other forms of injury, illness, and cognitive conditions.

Adaptive Climbing Victoria aims to increase the awareness of accessible climbing as a great way to stay active and get out and about, and to increase the knowledge and skills of climbing providers specific to people with adaptive climbing needs. Adaptive Climbing Victoria is a project of Sport Climbing Victoria, the State Sporting Association.

A Vertical Perspective

Rock climbing is a sport and recreation that lets us see the world from another perspective - the vertical one! The physical and mental challenge of climbing a wall provides a fantastic opportunity for inclusive adventures, as everyone's way of climbing is different.

Competitive Paraclimbing is growing in popularity on an international scale, and while our focus is at the local level, we also work closely with our National Sporting Association to provide athletes with pathways for competition and training.

Come and try adaptive climbing!

As a new and emerging organisation, Adaptive Climbing Victoria are running Come and Try days on a quarterly basis in a variety of indoor climbing gyms across urban Victoria, as well as limited outdoor events.

Adaptive Climbing Victoria are also providing training to volunteers and existing rock climbing providers to ensure that anyone who is keen can climb the wall and have a great time. The involvement and support from the wider climbing community has been truly remarkable and we are so grateful to all involved, as this makes our events full of fun, laughter, and adventure!
Keep an eye out on their social media channels for upcoming events, including volunteer training, Come and Try days and other opportunities.

Para DanceSport Workshop and Training Weekend
Para DanceSport Victoria were proud to host Kiyomi Yotsumoto at MarShere Dance Studios, Kilsyth for a Victorian first wheelchair dancing workshop. Over 40 people attended from all over Australia, including 7 wheelchair users.

This workshop was very engaging, providing the opportunity for everyone who attended a chance to come and try ballroom dancing and learn some amazing fundamentals in para dancing. It was incredibly informative and everyone had a lot of fun throughout the whole weekend.
Para DanceSport Victoria are now focusing on continuing this fantastic work and are looking forward to the next fabulous event.

Let's learn about... Power 2 Pedal

A bike riding program for people with autism.

Power 2 Pedal is an 8-week bike education program for people with ASD, delivered after school by qualified, friendly coaches.

This program enables kids and teens who haven’t yet mastered the art of balancing on a bike or riding a bike the opportunity to learn these skills in a safe environment. In additional to learning the skills of riding a bike, this program will build the confidence of participants, parents/guardians, and support workers by providing them with the tools and ability to take ‘practice’ outside the program, and build more physical activity into their daily lifestyles.
The Benefits

There are heaps of benefits that come from learning to ride and getting active:
  • Develop a lifelong skill
  • Increased physical activity
  • An opportunity to include active transport into lifestyles. e.g. riding to school
  • Build confidence and meet new people
  • Provides social connection for both participants and their families - the program is held in community settings such as local Cycling Clubs
Power 2 Pedal Classes

Each Power 2 Pedal class has a maximum of 10 participants and two coaches, and is held over 8 weeks during the school term. We suggest no training wheels because we are encouraging participants to learn to balance on a bike.
Given the nature of the activity involved, it is important that all participants attend the program with a parent, guardian, or support worker, so that each child has direct supervision and support to learn the new skill! The coaches will be there to lead the session, provide activities, and encourage the progress of each participant.
Upcoming Power 2 Pedal Program
Term One 2020 – Dates to be confirmed
Location – Geelong Cycling Club, Belmont
Cost - $60-$80 (tbc) for the 8-week program
Out of pocket or through NDIS Plan if specific funding permits
