Have you ever seen a student as excited as this one from our Claymobile after-school residency at Hunter Elementary
FIFTH EDITION: Fall with the Claymobile!

The start of a fantastic school year with the Claymobile!
Fall is always an exciting time for the Claymobile team. We press reset after the summer and jump back into working with students in classrooms, after-school programs, and more. We returned to many partner sites like the Lenfest Center and Ludlow School, while also adding a few new sites like Southwest Leadership Academy and Bayard Taylor Elementary School. Our favorite projects this fall have been leaf bowls and pinch-pot pumpkins to get us in the mood for the cool weather and changing colors of the trees. In October we also welcomed teachers back to school with our Fall Open House for Educators, a tradition we hope to continue year after year!

Spotlight: Claymobile by the numbers.
Here at The Clay Studio our development team is continuously working to support our Claymobile programs. Recently they challenged us to come up with some numbers to help demonstrate how much work the Claymobile does out in our community. Here is what we came up with:

In the 2018-2019 school year (including summer programs) the Claymobile team:
  • taught 885 classes;
  • worked with 3,801 students at over 100 partner sites
  • used 210 pints of underglaze, 60 gallons of glaze, and 70 gallons of our special Claymobile Clear Glaze;
  • we fired our kilns about 250 times; and used over 25,000 pounds of clay!
It was hard for us to picture 25,000 pounds of clay, but we determined its about 13 tons, or 4 medium-sized elephants worth of clay.

We had never examined our program by the numbers like this, but it helped us to visualize the impact of the Claymobile programming in our community. We are able to provide access to art programming for students who may not otherwise experience the power of creating in clay. This Giving Tuesday, consider supporting our Claymobile programming. $25 pays for one bag of clay for Claymobile students.

Mark your calendars, the 2020 Claymobile Creations show opens in January!

The 26th annual Claymobile Creations Exhibition showcases student work from The Clay Studio's Claymobile program. Each year Claymobile students create imaginative wonders under the guidance of our talented teaching artists. The students' artwork for this years exhibition are inspired by Philadelphia art and artists.

The show will be open from January 11 through February 2. Our student and family reception will be held on Sunday, January 12 from 1 pm to 3 pm.

Did you know? This fall The Clay Studio was selected to be a part of the 2019-20 Catalyzing Creative Aging cohort by the National Guild for Community Arts Education. As part of the cohort we are working with a team from Lifetime Arts to further develop our work with older adults in the Philadelphia community. To start off this training we attended a pre-conference institute at the Guild's annual conference in Austin, Texas, specifically focused on helping us think through more intentional programming for this audience. Over the next year we will continue our work with Lifetime Arts and the National Guild to create more targeted programming for older adults.
Check out our work!
Giving Tuesday is Tuesday, December 3. This year The Clay Studio is seeking support for our Claymobile programming. Please consider making a donation this year!

This little blue elephant image is loved by many. It was made by a student at South Philadelphia High School and was on display in the annual Clay Creations exhibition back in 2009. The student named the elephant Kimmy.
Educators who attended our Fall Open House at The Clay Studio were able to make leaf-bowls, try their hand at the pottery wheel, tour the building, and learn more about our on and off-site programming. Keep an eye out for our open house for educators again next fall!
Did you know we have a bicycle powered pottery wheel? It's the newest addition to our community programming. Check it out in the galleries during our holiday ornament show
Claymobile student, Laverne, made this beautiful plate during a Claymobile workshop at Inglis House. We can't wait for her to see the finished project!
Check out this little pinch-pot birdy made by a Claymobile student at Mastery Prep Elementary School
At the Lenfest Center we made pinch pot animals with the Claymobile students. This animal was inspired by the student's pet, Chi Chi the cat!
Thank you for joining us at our 2019 Clay Fest in September! We welcomed over 500 members of our community to the lot which will soon be the new home of The Clay Studio. We decorated ice cream bowls, shared a meal, threw on the pottery wheel, witnessed an amazing artist demo by Ibrahim Said, participated in a raku firing, debuted our new bicycle powered pottery wheel, and had a blast with new and old friends. Check out some photos from the event on our Facebook page.

P.S. If you haven't had a chance to stop by our gallery to pick up your work from the event, we still have it on our shelves waiting for you. The deadlined passed, but we'll leave them here for another week or two!
