This month we’re celebrating the launch of our third Development Impact Bond! Amongst other things this year, we’ve worked across geographies, partners and issues to design and launch:
- The Cameroon Newborn DIB which is rolling out Kangaroo Mother Care, an evidence-based programme of skin-to-skin care to improve neonatal health outcomes, in 10 hospitals across Cameroon. We launched in April and will soon have an update on the year 1 results. Watch this space!
- The Finance4Jobs DIB in the West Bank which is a new and exciting outcomes-based approach to funding skills training, by tying payments to sustained youth employment.
- The Cambodia Rural Sanitation DIB with the goal of 1600 villages claiming Open Defecation Free status, whilst increasing rural sanitation coverage to 85% in target areas by 2023.
Beyond Impact Bonds, our team is designing outcomes-based approaches to a number of other issues including a financing facility for malaria and a fund for climate resilience in northern Kenya (profiled below). Our outcomes-based approaches build on strong partnerships to achieve real impact at scale. Follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter to stay up to date.

Could a dedicated financing facility bridge the gap for malaria?
Blog Post
Earlier this year we worked with The Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria; the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and the President’s Malaria Initiative to explore this question.
Our Associate, Guy Pickles, reflects on what we learnt and concludes that more funding alone won’t eliminate malaria, it’s the way it’s delivered that will make the difference. READ MORE HERE.

Is there a place for the private sector in development? We think so, but it has to be done right.

Of the 160+ Impact Bond contracts that have launched worldwide to date, Social Finance has designed or supported more than half. In 2020 we’ll be working hard to share our learning around outcomes-based approaches and adaptive management for impact with the broader market. We began this year by supporting the design and launch of a new Global Knowledge Hub hosted by Oxford University’s GO Lab. Follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter to find out more.

In November 2019, parallel to the GSG Impact Summit in Argentina, the Latin American Payment by Results (PbR) Network (Red PxR in Spanish) launched at an official event attended by an audience of investors, social providers, government, philanthropy and other market actors. The network brings together 10 practitioner organisations that have been deeply involved in developing the Impact Bond market in 6 Latin American countries. It has an ambitious agenda of learning, sharing experience and supporting policy and practice. We wrote a blog post about why Social Finance is proud to be part of it. READ MORE HERE.
