Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez, DFTA Commissioner
A Message from the Commissioner:

In the season of gratitude, we strive to create:

A city where older adults have fulfilling lives;
where they can enjoy its richness - arts, music, dance, culture.

A city where older adults are empowered and treasured;
surrounded by family, peers, and intergenerational friends.

A city where older adults are supported;
with access to mental health and health care services.

A city where older adults are safe;
in their communities and their homes.

What does your New York City look like? Send me a message.

Until next month,
Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez
Commissioner of the NYC Department for the Aging

    Did You Know?
  • Older New Yorkers account for 20% of the City's total population.
  • By 2040, New York’s 60+ population is projected to reach 1.86 million, a 48.5% increase from 2000.
  • New York City's life expectancy at birth is at an all-time high of 81.2 years.

Older Adults in Your City

There is a doctor in this house and her name is Melissa M. Freeman, M.D. At 93 years old, Dr. Freeman has been practicing medicine for 64 years. For the past 30 years, she has served the Harlem community through her private practice in internal medicine.

Dr. Freeman was born in the Bronx and received her B.A. from Hunter College. She then continued her studies at Howard University College of Medicine, where she received her Doctor of Medicine degree. She interned at Kings County Hospital and completed her residency at Meadowbrook Hospital and the Manhattan Veterans Administration Hospital. In 1964, she joined the staff of Mount Sinai Beth Israel, treating narcotic addictions, where she was honored for her pioneering modality treatment of Opioid addicted women.

Dr. Freeman’s elixirs of life are music, art, and travel. Her mantra as she continues to serve the Harlem community: just keep moving.
