UK Recycling's New Campaign #BringOnTheBoxes

Hayley Christie, UK Recycling's new Americorps Environmental Educator, collecting #BringOnTheBox pledges
November 15th was America Recycles Day which has been hosted by Keep America Beautiful and celebrated across the country since 1997. America Recycles Day aims to end littering, improve recycling, and beautify communities. For the fifth consecutive year, UK Recycling celebrated with a full month of outreach and education. This year’s campaign was #BringOnTheBoxes, an effort to remind everyone that cardboard is recyclable. A waste characterization study done a UK showed that 5% of our landfill-bound material is still cardboard.

As part of the celebration, UK Recycling launched a pledge drive where participants commit to increase their recycling and to learn more about recycling on campus. You can still take the pledge here. As a bonus, participants will be entered into a raffle for the chance to win prizes.

These efforts are the result of the hard work of Hayley Christie, our new AmeriCorp Environmental Educator. She will be with UK Recycling for the 2019-2020 school year and comes to us as a recent graduate from Southeastern University in Florida, with a degree in Music Education. As a student co-founded a Green Team that started a recycling program at SEU and has has brought that same enthusiasm and dedication to UK. If you are interested in having her come speak to your group, organization, staff meeting and/or class about our recycling efforts on campus, contact her at hch334@uky.edu.
