OPIRG Carleton (Ontario Public Interest Research Group) is a student-led, student-funded non-profit based at Carleton University. We aim to research, educate and provide action on social and environmental justice using a non-hierarchical and consensus based space for students to organize.

A working group is an open collective of individuals that choose to work on a specific issue or campaign. OPIRG Carleton supports several working groups including Anakbayan Ottawa, Books 2 Prisoners, Herongate Tenant Coalition, Students Against Israeli Apartheid, The Leveller, and Yoga Unity. Ask us if you want to learn more or join a working group!

Books 2 Prisoners: Monthly Meetings

Books to Prisoners sends free books to prisoners across Canada and the US, and responds to letters from prisoners. As an abolitionist group, they believe that education and human contact are important to maintain mental health while incarcerated.

B2P meets on the second Wednesday of every month. We are always looking for volunteers so contact us if you would like to join.

Activist Burnout: Coping & Caring for Each Other

Join the Wellness Centre (University Centre 426F) and facilitator RJ Pate on Wednesday, November 20 from 5-7 PM for an open discussion around how we can better support one another through burnout and the physical, mental and emotional exhaustion that can come with organizing around issues you are care deeply about.

Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil


Stand in solidarity and mourning with Ottawa's trans community to remember those who were murdered due to transphobic violence in the last year. The community vigil will take place at the Human Rights monument at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, November 20.

After the vigil, there will be a community gathering from 6:30-9:00 PM with snacks and refreshments at the church at the corner of Elgin and Lisgar.
 

Reroot: Writing Workshop

Join RISE Ottawa and Pass the Vibes on Wednesday, November 20 from 5:45-8:45 PM at REBEL (377 Dalhousie St.) as they create a closed community healing space for BIPOC to explore & deepen our connection to the land. During this workshop, there will be an opportunity for folks to write a #lettertotheland. Participants are not required to share their letters. Registration is required, the workshop is open to 30 participants.

Panel: Radical Approaches to Health & Social Justice

The Harm Reduction Collective presents: radical approaches to health and social justice, a panel discussion with community groups and organizations like Yoga Unity, the Ottawa Abortion Doula Collective, Aunties on the Road and Inner City Health.

Join us on Thursday, November 21 from 7-9 PM at Robertson Hall (Senate Room 608) as we discuss a wide range of approaches to health, harm reduction and social justice with different communities. Dinner will be provided.

Queer Soup Night

It's been a cold week! Come warm up at Queer Soup Night this Sunday, November 24 from 5:30-8:30 PM. As a quarterly event that takes place on the last Sunday of the month, QSN raises money for a community organization, highlights the talent of queer chefs, and nourishes our community by gathering in an atmosphere of authentic inclusiveness.

This is a sober, family-friendly, no/low fragrance, pay-what-you-can (suggested $10/person) fundraising event. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Womxn Demanding Climate Justice

Join Ask Womxn Anything at Bar Robo Chinatown (692 Somerset St. W) at 7 PM on Tuesday, November 26 for a panel discussion on the climate crisis and how we can bring about swift climate justice. Swing by and ask the panel of experts and organizers in the community anything!

The event is FREE but requires pre-booked tickets for entry. Folks without tickets will be let in on a first come first serve basis after ticket holders.

Protest Doug Ford

The Ontario PC's are organizing a Holiday Reception featuring Doug Ford. With tickets at $1000 each, it's clear who Doug Ford and his party truly represent.

Join us for a lively community gathering on Monday, December 2 from 5-8 PM at the Ottawa Conference and Events Centre (200 Coventry Rd.) to protest Doug Ford and the Conservatives, and say clearly that Doug Ford is not welcome here. Bring banners, noise makers, and warm clothes. More details to come.
