May you enjoy a warm holiday with family and friends!

School will be closed Nov. 27th through Nov. 29, 2019

The Center for P-20 Safety and Security was formed as a collaborative effort between the Ohio Department of Higher Education and the Ohio Department of Education to create safe and supportive learning environments and respond to violence and its causes in educational settings throughout Ohio. Center personnel focus on school climate, safety, security and emergency management concerns in the K-12 and higher education environments, providing guidance and direction to promote physically safe and emotionally secure environments for students, educators, and staff.

Over the course of three calendar years, school districts are responsible for ensuring the completion of one of three emergency management tests annually.  Exercises are limited to: tabletop, functional, and full-scale as outlined in Ohio Revised Code 3301-5-01 and Ohio Revised Code 3313.536.

Our school district will be conducting the full-scale exercise this school year on Tuesday, November 26th.

This is ONLY A DRILL.

Each building of Wayne Local School will experience a difference kind of situation in which safety measures will be different for each site.  If you know your child has an appointment and will need picked up on Tuesday, November 26th, please contact the building administrator by Monday so arrangements can be made in advance.  We will be looking for areas to improve upon and ask for your cooperation in making this drill go as smooth as possible.

Thank you.

CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS

Over the last few weeks, we have seen some new work begin as the footers were molded and poured.

Soon, we will begin to see some early masonry work, as well as some underground storm pipe, plumbing, and electrical work for Unit "A."   For an explanation of Unit "A," please see below.

The new elementary building has been divided into three segmented areas – Unit “A”, Unit “B” and Unit “C.”   Unit “A” is the side closest to the high school and contains the mechanicals, gymnasium and kitchen areas.   Unit “C” is the single story part of the building containing the early childhood wing closest to the present elementary.  Unit “B” is the core and classroom areas.

The plan, weather permitting, is to focus on Area “A” first.  If weather was to become adverse, they will switch to Area “C” because it is one story and easier to get under roof.  Area “B” will always be the middle part of the work regardless.

Waynesville third grade Spartan Stars visit and spread kindness one book at a time. Once a month, these students take the time to give back to those in our community. Thank you to these students, families, and third grade staff for supporting this monthly event.

YMCA 4th Grade Swim Program

Our 4th graders had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a five week swim program at Lebanon’s Countryside YMCA.  Students were bussed on Friday mornings for a 45 minute swim lesson.  All students were placed in a specific level of ability, so each week’s swim lesson could target the skills needed to progress as a swimmer.

The program was an absolute success and the kids were excited to go every Friday!  All students gained confidence and learned safety and survival skills when in the water.  Students who had little experience swimming were able to jump in the water and learn some basic strokes, and the more advanced swimmers were able to show off their skills while swimming laps.  On the last day, students that passed a swim test were able to go down the water slide, which was definitely a hit!  But all students participated in a “fun day” with fountains and swimming with friends.

At the end of the program, students were surveyed and the following were the most frequent comments:
  • “I liked that we got in small groups and got to learn how to swim better.”
  • “The instructors were nice and fun!”
  • “I was afraid to jump in or float on my back, but now I know how.”
  • “I love swimming and loved that we got to do it during the school day with friends!”
  • “The thing I liked most was swimming laps!”
  • “I loved the fun day with the slide on the last day!”
  • “I loved EVERYTHING about it!”

Thank you Countryside YMCA and Waynesville Administration for this incredible experience for our students!

The After School Tutoring group has started. The group focuses on reading strategies to encourage academic success. One of the most important strategies we focus on is to go back into the text to find “evidence” from the text to support the answer to the reading comprehension questions that are being asked.

Did you know that according to www.Renaissance.com that “Fewer than one in five students averaged a half-hour or more of reading per day, and fewer than one in three read between 15 and 29 minutes on a daily basis. The problem is that 15 minutes seems to be the “magic number” at which students start seeing substantial positive gains in reading achievement, yet less than half of our students are reading for that amount of time.”

A few minutes of time spent reading each day can lead to a lifetime of understanding!  These are a few suggestions to encourage and support reading together:

1.  Read aloud together. Take turns reading and discussing what you are reading together.

2.  Encourage your child to create a picture in their mind of what they are reading.
Can they describe it to you?

3.  Ask questions while you are reading. Who are the characters in the story?  Where does the story take place? When did it happen? What is going on in the story, is there a problem, how does it get solved? Why do the characters behave the way they do or why did the author write this selection for you to read?

4.  Stop along the way while you are reading to ask your child what they think will happen next. Have them provide details of why they think that. Are their details connected to the information you are reading?

5.  Is the book you are reading together on their level? Are there words that are unfamiliar that you can look up together? Many books use figurative language to relay the information. Take time to discuss figures of speech and what they mean with the content.

Taking the time to read together not only encourages academic growth but it helps to open opportunities to talk and grow together, building a relationship that will last far beyond their academic years.

Project Gunlock is a community safety initiative supported by the Village of Waynesville, Wayne Township, Mary L. Cook Public Library, Waynesville Area Chamber of Commerce, Wayne Local Schools, and endorsed by “The Waynesville Way.”  Collectively, we encourage gun owners to safely secure their firearms and to always be aware of who can access them to prevent accident, theft and misuse.  These organizations and three local businesses – B & B Carryout, Waynesville Pharmacy, and Pat’s Place, are providing free gun locks to secure firearms.

This community-wide initiative is to spread a very important message.  We ask you to pledge to keep our community’s children safe and confident by always safely securing your guns.

Warren County Crisis Text Line:
Crises aren't "9 to 5" happenings. They sometimes come on when it's not easy to pickup a phone and call someone.  But you can text for help at any time.  Chat with a trained person by texting "4hope" to 741741.  That person will help you de-escalate and can offer information about local resources where you can find in-person help if needed.

The Crisis Text Line is always there for you, 24/7.  Just send a message (text 4hope to 741741.

Wayne Local Schools is expanding its services with The Education Connection (TEC) to include a Safety/Bully Tip Line.  When you witness verbal, written, physical, or electronic abuse, speak up!  If students hear or see suspicious behavior from another student, they should not ignore it.  We encourage all students to report any concerns about another student or the safety and security of Wayne Local School District.
Anyone can report anonymously a bullying/safety issue by calling the TEC tip line at (513) 855-4350 option 7 or by going online at waynelocal.tipline.info.   The tip line will also allow you to choose an incident number so that you can receive an update on the status or provide new information for this incident and still remain ANONYMOUS.

The information will be immediately forwarded to the proper authority.  All reports are taken very seriously.
There are posters displayed in all buildings with tip line information to remind students to always adopt the mindset of “if you see something or know something, say something.”
