Think Safety: Tips from Campus Police
DATE SAFE
What’s Your Comfort Zone? If you only feel safe on campus, stay on campus. Your first date could be conversation and coffee in the Buc.
Friends with Friends: Meet potential dates through the people you trust. Your roommate, sorority sister, fraternity brother, or your teammate may have a friend you like. Your friends can vouch for their friends.
Stay Connected: While on the date, make sure you stay connected to friends or family. Let them know who you are going out with, where you’re going, when you'll be back, what you'll be doing, and why you're going out with this person.
Phone a Friend: Have a friend call or text you at a specific time to check in. Or, you could set up a word or phrase (green-everything is okay, red-call me, meet me, or call the police) that indicates if everything is okay or if there's trouble. Make sure someone knows where your date is taking you and approximately when you'll be back.
Before You Go: If you can, find out about the persons previous relationships. Are they funny and friendly or are they verbally or physically abusive? Know before you go!
Can You Hear Me Now? Fully charge your cell phone before a date. You never want to be in a situation where you need to call 911 or Campus Police (321-3550), but you can’t.
