Sad Bastard Music Club

Volume 13

So, I've been sitting on this edition for 7 months. I started it in April of this year, summer has come and gone, empires have risen and fallen, and still the 13th edition of the Sad Bastard Music Club mixtape hasn't come out. I blame it on the fact that it is episode 13 which is inherently unlucky (or lucky, depending on where you're from).

Well, I'm back and here's some more music for you. It's not like I've forgotten you, I've been quietly building this playlist for the last 7 months and just haven't ever pushed the button. So I'm doing it now. It's an interesting mix of new and old stuff, sad stuff and angry stuff and stuff for sad bastards.

Speaking of sad bastards, I'd like to take a minute to direct your attention to @nickcaveandthebadmemes on Instagram. It's definitely up your alley if you're on Insta and like the stuff that I put into these playlists.

Final thought: Last time I sent one of these, I mentioned that, overall, across all playlists, I'd finally reached some semblance of gender parity -- or at least combated male dominance -- in the featured artists. Now, this is a highly flawed calculation because it was largely based on the front-person of a band or artist, so an all-male band with a female vocalist would rank as high as an all-female group or female solo artist. Still, given the gender disparity in the music business as a whole and my goal of equal representation, it was a step in the right direction. I'm still working on equalizing the ratio, but I have another graphic to show.

This is a screenshot of the beginnings of the Sad Bastard playlists. Bands identified as "male" are blue and bands identified as "female" are red. Bands with equal representation are yellow and bands with nonbinary or trans artists are green. You get a pretty clear picture of who's dominating here:

Now here's a view of the most recent playlists:

I mean, it's something I'm pretty happy about.

Something else I'm happy about? The fact that Joan Jett's entire backcatalog is (finally) available on Spotify. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to put "Bad Reputation" on one of these but couldn't.

Final note: If you aren't listening to the podcast I am doing with two amazing individuals (and have been for almost two years) you should check it out, too. We're on all the things now (I think), including Spotify.
It's called Binary Jazz.

But that's all the happy. Here's the sad.
