Stutsman County Courthouse State Historic Site Receives Grant to Develop Citizenship Exhibit
JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The 1883 Courthouse Committee has received a $24,000 grant from the Jamestown Tourism Board on behalf of the Stutsman County Courthouse State Historic Site to create an exhibit about citizenship. The grant enables the Courthouse to obtain historically accurate furnishings, objects, and historic technology.
The multi-sensory exhibit will be a fully furnished and immersive recreation of a historic space illustrating concepts from history for children and adults. It will illustrate various roles in local government such as judges, sheriffs, and auditors, and provide insights into rights and responsibilities as United States citizens.
“The Courthouse is well suited to an approach like this,” said Historic Sites Manager Rob Hanna. “Most of the building has been faithfully restored. We have the actual rooms where women voted for the first time, jurors served, immigrants became citizens, draftees went to war. We’re adding missing elements that will help tell those powerful stories.”
