SARRAH to Administer the Allied Health Rural Generalist Workforce and Education Scheme (AHRGWES)
SARRAH Acting CEO Cath Maloney was pleased to be in Dubbo this week for the announcement from the Hon. Mark Coulton MP of the Allied Health Rural Generalist Workforce and Education Scheme (AHRGWES) which will be administered by SARRAH for the next 2 years. The education program will create incentives for allied health professionals to work in regional areas and better equip them with the skills needed for rural practice. More here

You are invited to participate in a national consultation on Dementia in Australia
Commonwealth, State and Territory Health Ministers have started a national consultation and evaluation process to inform national planning and action after the current National Framework for Action on Dementia 2015 – 2019 expires.
The invitation provides “opportunity to inform and scope options for national strategies to address dementia in the future” and aims to be “strategic, collaborative and cost-effective”.
The work is being led by the Western Australian Department of Health and supported by a national dementia working group.
SARRAH Members may have an interest in contributing either directly and/or by providing input to SARRAHs Submission.

Two types of Submissions are being sought – and separate submission templates have been provided for each:
- For people who have, or know someone who has a lived experience of dementia - Click here

DVA veteran cards and health care arrangements
The following suite of articles relating to Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Veteran Cards and health care arrangements have been published in DVA Provider News:
‘New-look card shows veteran support' - The article advises health providers that they can expect to start seeing DVA clients present their new-look Veteran Cards (Gold, White or Orange), for treatments and services.
‘Understanding the DVA Gold Card’ - An overview for providers about the entitlement of DVA Gold Card holders, which DVA-funded treatments they can receive.
Earlier this year, DVA also published an article about ‘Understanding the DVA Veteran Card – White’ which is a handy companion to the two recently published articles.

Record crop of bush health students
A record crop of health science students has been trained by Australia's hard-working University Departments of Rural Health, according to latest statistics. UDRHs are located in rural and remote areas in every state and the NT. They focus on addressing rural health workforce shortages by exposing students from universities around the country to the many career - and lifestyle - opportunities that exist in those communities. In 2018, nearly 14,000 nursing, midwifery and allied health students took part in clinical placement programs offered by 16 UDRHs. UDRHs supported almost 8,000 nursing and midwifery students and just under 6,000 allied health students. More here

Scholarships
If you are an eligible health care professional working in primary care in rural or remote South Australia, you can apply for a grant of up to $10,000 to increase your clinical skills and scope of practice through training or study.
More than 75 health care professionals were awarded a bursary or scholarship in Round 2 for 2019-20 of the Health Workforce Scholarship Program.
You can apply for up to $10,000 to support relevant post-graduate studies, short courses, workshops or attendance at conferences that can be completed by 31 December 2020.

Skin Cancer Action Week reminds us to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide - Melanoma is expected to be the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer, with 15,229 new cases estimated. Unfortunately, up to 1,725 people will die from the disease this year.
Centre of Research Excellence in Suicide Prevention Phase Two officially launched - ‘Towards Zero’ suicide prevention goal, with phase two of the Black Dog Institute’s Centre of Research Excellence in Suicide Prevention (CRESP II) officially launched in Sydney.
Eliminating rheumatic heart disease is within our grasp - The biennial Communicable Diseases Conference being held in Canberra has heard that rheumatic heart disease (RHD) continues to be the clearest example of the disparity in health outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous Australians.
Ethicon response to Federal Court of Australia judgment on pelvic mesh class action - Ethicon empathises with women who have experienced complications following pelvic mesh procedures. It’s important to note pelvic mesh has helped improve the quality of life for millions of women worldwide with stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
Interfaces between the aged care and the health care system - The scope and purpose for the upcoming Canberra hearing of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety in December is now available to view on the Commission website. The hearing will inquire into interfaces between the aged care system and the health care system. The hearing will commence on Monday, 9 December 2019.
