One month holiday countdown means biggest Guide yet

Today, our third annual BC Craft Beer Holiday Gift Guide launched. It’s a unique creation: an 18-page “look book” of curated beer gift ideas. It all started when one of our key contributors decided to write a post about beer gifts…then it kind of mushroomed.

For 2019, it’s expanded with many unique new picks like dog leashes and collars, baby wear, shoes, tech accessories, rolling papers, a wall clock and a fishing lure. It’s pretty wild how far you can go with craft beer as a gift theme. Check it out here: 2019 Holiday Gift Guide →

VCBW honoured again

Congrats to Vancouver Craft Beer Week, which took the title of Social Event of the Year at the Golden Owl Awards on Monday night. VCBW has won a lot of honours, but it’s still impressive for a beer festival to take a broad category like that. Story →

Winds of change blow through Colorado

Last week, we took a break from BC news to share the depressing developments in Oregon, where the independent Portland beer (and cider) scene has been taking a kick in the teeth lately, in terms of businesses closing or changing hands. Well, it turns out that one of the other key States Of Beer in the US is having a bad run too.

New Belgium Brewing, Colorado’s largest craft brewery, announced Tuesday that they’ve been acquired by the Kirin beer conglomerate. That’s a massive loss to the “independent movement”, for those of us that worry about such things. In addition, Boulder Beer Company and Avery Brewing sold out earlier this year. We keep hoping this trend is still a ways off for the BC scene. Story →

UPCOMING EXBEERIENCES

with Ed Kaye

Things seemed to be slowing down a bit last week in terms of beer events, but they’ve picked right up again this week, with beer festivals, tap takeovers, pairing dinners, and more!

Tonight, Smiths pub in Victoria is hosting a Prairies tap takeover, featuring a selection of hard-to-find beers from Nokomis, Brazen Hall, Malty National, Torque, Black Bridge, and 9 Mile Legacy.

If you missed the BC Beer Awards and want to know what all the fuss is about, Joe Wiebe is holding a tasting seminar on the award winners at Vessel Liquor in Victoria tonight.

On Friday, The White Whale in Courtney is hosting a Spinnakers tap takeover, where they will have 13 draught beers on offer, as well as a special cask. The same night, Session in Campbell River is also holding a Spinnakers tap takeover, with 4 taps and 4 casks.

If variety is what you are craving, the 24th annual Hopscotch Festival comes to the PNE in Vancouver on Friday. Along with craft beer, this tasting event features 350 different varieties of Scotch and other whisky, tequila, rum, gin, vodka, cider, wine, and food.

Saturday sees the first North Island Craft Beer Festival take place at the Campbell River Community Centre. The event will host 14 Vancouver Island breweries pouring 28 different beers.

On Sunday, Session in Campbell river is holding a Twin City brewmasters’ dinner. They will be serving up a four-course meal and the head brewer will be on site to talk about the beers and the brewery.

On Tuesday, CRAFT Kelowna is holding a Slackwater brewmaster’s dinner, where they will be serving 5 courses paired with 5 beers, accompanied by facts about the beers and brewery.

On Wednesday, Smiths in Victoria is hosting another tap takeover, this time featuring Courtenay’s brand new Ace Brewing.
