Since yesterday's Evening Standard...
What's the best AD job in Missouri Valley Conference? According to sitting ADs & executive leaders around college athletics who responded to the latest Athletic Department Power Index survey from AthleticDirectorU & Athlete Viewpoint, it's Northern Iowa. Illinois State & Loyola (Chicago) follow the Panthers, with Missouri State, Drake, Bradly & Southern Illinois making up the middle tier. Valpo, Indiana State & Evansville in the bottom third. UNI also topped the list on the question of which MVC AD chair is most likely to lead to a 'Power 5' gig. More, including results to questions about facilities, institutional alignment, quality of life, non-revenue sports, donor support, etc. (link)
"I don't think anyone wants to see us play the University of Akron." That basically sums up what North Dakota State Prez Bresciani thinks about a potential move to FBS for the Bison. North Dakota Governor Burgum: "You never say never, but it's a fun ride with NDSU being competitive nationally every year in FCS. Ask me again after the Bison play the University of Oregon next fall in Eugene." NDSU AD Larsen also comments on fans leaving FB games at halftime, points to issues across the nation, not just in Fargo, though he is bothered by those who don't stay to support second & third string student-athletes. (link)
SWAC Commish McClelland on the future location of his league's FB championship game, currently played on campus of the top seed, "What I want to do is bring the maximum amount of revenue into our membership,. I would be a hypocrite if I didn’t put that as a priority. […] We are going to do what makes financial sense to our membership and what makes financial sense to our fans and what makes it an enjoyable experience for our institutions and our fans. […] If someone offers us enough money to move we will definitely consider that. Just know if we do move, we got more than a half-million dollars, that’s for sure. We’re not going to allow you to take money out of our mouths to generate money for you. Pay me what I’m worth then we can talk." (link)
In 2018, Sacramento State received 83% of its athletics budget from allocated funds, with student fees making up 31% of the overall budget. A breakdown of Big Sky department finances is included, shows $26.5M in revenue, $27.3M in expenses and $22M in allocated dollars for the Hornets. AD Orr on the "non-uniqueness" of his program's situation: "None of them [Division I athletic departments] are self-supported, everybody’s depending on the university to supplement the programs." But he is optimistic about the future: "We do have some plans already in place for this school year that (are) helping (to) close the gap. One is a successful football program." Orr also reaffirms the Hornets' commitment to the league. A bit more as he looks to narrow the budget gap, helped by FB's success this season. (link)
The field at Purdue's Ross-Ade Stadium will get an official name in time for next season, though whose name will go on the field and the amount of the gift that secured the spot will not be released until tomorrow. The field dedication is scheduled for September 12. (link); The new 2,500-seat hockey facility planned at Ohio State will be solely for the women's team. The men's team will continue to play at Value City Arena. (link)
USC AD Bohn says FB HC Helton "had a good idea" since the Trojans' last game of the season - a win over UCLA on November 23rd - that he'd be returning to lead the program. Why did it take so long for a public announcement? Bohn to CBSSports.com's Dodd, "That's a fair question. The answer is nothing new as far as what we're learning. As I told the team, we've been working hard insuring that we have alignment on the ability for us to invest more in this program. Looking at how we put those in play, we just needed some extra time to do that. There was no reason to rush." (link); Sports Illustrated/The Maven's Maya finally apologies for his erroneous report from Sunday when he reported Bohn would be making change. (link)

A number of interesting nuggets from SportsBusiness Journal's Deal Makers event in NYC. Fanatics boss Rubin: "The single biggest growth opportunity for us is the college space." Teall Capital Chief Strategy Officer Day: "Broadly speaking, we are bullish on the experience economy. [...] You're going to see us drift more & more into the physical experience augmented by the digital experience." OneTeam Partners leader Nassar says the move to aggregate & create the new entity is partially about a "theme over the last five to 10 years of athlete empowerment." NBA Commish Silver on tech change, "We have no choice but to innovate right now." ESPN EVP for Programming & Scheduling Magnus: "We would be foolish not to use every asset at our disposal to make smart, disciplined rights deals that flow across all of our platforms." (link, link); SBJ's Ourand goes in further with comments from NBA Commish Silver, who says the cable TV landscape is significantly challenged with cord-cutting, also points out the challenge of discovering content. More. (link)
TV: If NFL rights deals shape how broadcasters & media companies strategize about college opportunities, this is a must read as The Hollywood Reporter's Gardner reviews the Supreme Court's potential role in deciding how the NFL packages its rights. "If the Sunday Ticket case moves forward, it won't necessarily disrupt the status quo immediately. The NFL may be able to justify some of its rules — for instance, those ensuring healthy stadium attendance. But other rules that merely serve to fatten a league's profits without benefiting sports consumers could be subject to newfound legal scrutiny." (link); Amid the narrative around Fox's Big Noon Kickoff carving out its own space alongside ESPN's College GameDay, former Fox Sports staffer & current consultant Crakes provides some context, "FOX is a full reach broadcast network. ESPN is not. Struggling to remember a time when a broadcast network wasn’t assumed to be able to beat a Pay TV network head to head and apples to apples." (link); The CBS-Viacom merger is officially done, will now operate under the ViacomCBS name. Weber State brass move Interim AD Crompton to the role on a permanent basis. VP for Administrative Services Tarbox, who oversees Athletics, "Tim is a perfect fit for Weber State. He knows the community and the campus. He knows good coaching. He’s committed to help our student-athletes reach their potential on the field and in the classroom. And he bleeds purple." (link)
A Florida A&M Board of Trustees committee met today to consider whether to offer new AD Gosha a three-year contract worth $200K per year. The deal, which the full board is expected to take up on Thursday, would also pay Gosha $20K for each guarantee game worth over $600K; $25K for raising over $750K in the first year; $35K for raising in excess of $850K in the second year;  and $50K for raising at least $1M in the third year. All bonuses are contingent upon FAMU balancing its athletic budget each year. FAMU can terminate the contract at anytime without cause, at which point Gosha would be owed 20 weeks’ salary. Should Gosha leave, his buyout drops from $40K to $20K to $0 in each respective year. (link)
The Athletic’s Vannini takes a look at the cluster of Group of 5 teams vying for a New Year’s Six bowl spot, as well as the strategies of the league commissioners to promote their respective candidates. AAC Commish Aresco has been outspoken in advocating for Memphis and Cincinnati. As Vannini observes: “Aresco will talk to reporters who ask, he’ll go on radio shows, he’ll push a public case for someone in the conference.” Mountain West Commish Thompson takes a different tack, preferring to “let the results speak for themselves,” adding: “As long as we’re stating our case, everything else is kind of superfluous. It really doesn’t matter what others think. It’s those people that are raising their hand.” Sun Belt AD Gill subscribes to a similar philosophy. “We’re not going to do a bunch of talking. We’re not going to disparage other conferences and other opponents. We’re not going to try to argue that we’ve got the best 3-8 team in the nation. … We’re going to fight and claw and hope our champion represents the Group of 5 in the Cotton Bowl.” (link)
FB HCs: USC AD Bohn confirms HC Helton will be back. In a memo obtained by Yahoo Sports, "Heading into 2020, Coach Helton and I will work together to take a hard look at all aspects of the football enterprise and will make the tough decisions necessary to compete at a championship level." (link); Colorado State AD Parker is the latest on the carousel. Outgoing HC Bobo settles for a $1.825M buyout, was due $5.5M minus mitigation. (link); Oregon State AD Barnes has indicated that he is in talks with FB HC Smith to rework his contract and increase the salary pool for ACs. While there is no set timeline, Barnes hopes to have a new deal worked out with Smith in the next 30 days. (link); Despite finishing 3-9 and 2-10 in the past two seasons, South Alabama HC Campbell’s job is not in jeopardy, according to AD Erdmann, who told AL.com: “It never crossed my mind. … Other than wins and losses, what I’ve observed in the football program is very positive and I do believe that coaches need to be given appropriate amounts of time to build something the right way and not take shortcuts.” (link); USF has raised $21M of its $40M goal to expand the Morsani FB Practice Complex. Assoc. AD for Communications Siegrist: “I anticipate momentum on the project to resume once we have announced a new head coach.” (link)

The club will maintain a free channel with content in front of a paywall. Senior VP of Digital, Marketing, Media Crisp: “With the YouTube memberships launch, we are giving fans a more flexible opportunity to access premium content, while also helping us to serve them our award-winning videos on the platform they love.” (link)

FB student-athletes may no longer be able to appear in four games without burning a redshirt, according to West Virginia AD Lyons, who is serving as chair of the NCAA DI FB Oversight Committee. Lyons noted that the rule is being used as a loophole by some players who play in the four games before entering the transfer portal. “I don’t think it’s a good optic for college sports. The way it looks, a student-athlete is potentially quitting on his team.” Lyons went on to explain that his concern is with the “120 guys in the locker room” who aren’t transferring but whose playing time may be dictated by the decision of one or two guys. “In a lot of cases, the one individual is getting a lot of publicity for not playing any further. A lot of that erodes what you’re trying to do in the locker room to build a team. … “It’s something the committee will look at in their January meeting to make any adjustments as necessary.” (link)
Fox Sports EVP Mulvihill with more goodies, outlines college FB share viewing changes over the past five years as Fox has gone from 6% to 21%. ESPN from 30% to 22%. ABC from 27% to 28%. CBS from 16% to 17%. More, including, "CFB Saturdays now have a pretty orderly flow, with one network clearly in control of each window. Number of weeks won by time period: Noon - FOX won 9 of 14. Late Afternoon - CBS won 11 of 14. Primetime - ABC won 9 of 14." (link, link)

(link); UNLV has named alumna and current Cal State Northridge AC Ruiz-Williams women's soccer HC. (link); Cal Poly men’s golf HC Cartwright has announced his retirement after 19 seasons, effective at the end of the academic year. After being tasked with increasing ticket revenue by 45% department-wide, UMKC MBB and WBB are 78% toward that goal, according to AD Martin, who acknowledged that “attendance for the Olympic sports for the fall has been flat.” Specifically, Women's Soccer drew 3,803 fans, 56 fewer than last year, while Men's Soccer was down 897 to 2,930 -- although they played three fewer home games. Additionally, VB attendance has decreased 556 to 3,257; however, VB also played three fewer home matches. Meanwhile, UMKC social media accounts have increased their following by an average of 12% across their three social media platforms, and Marketing Manager McMorrow notes that “from our student engagement at games, our season ticket holders, community members, we’ve had more people involved at our fall sports.” (link)
Loyola (Chicago) students have expressed a desire to see sports other than just MBB publicized around campus. Student Gutierrez, for example, said he had “no idea” that the WSOC and MSOC teams both advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. Director of Marketing and Ticket Operations Day, however, insists the school focuses on all sports equally: “I think basketball definitely got the most national and local attention a couple years ago]. [But] we’re looking for success in all of our sports [and] we’re looking for increased attendance in all of our sports.” Senior Assoc AD for External Operations Sorboro adds: “From a resource standpoint and a manpower and time standpoint … it’s balanced across the board.” Meanwhile, AD Watson notes that the exposure gained during the school’s 2018 Final Four run was significantly greater than that of MVB’s consecutive national titles in 2014-15. “And the revenue that’s realized as a result … is not even in the same ballpark.” (link)
The Athletic’s Auerbach caught up with Auburn student King, whose plunge into the hedges after Saturday’s Iron Bowl went viral. King explained that after watching fans rush the field after the 2017 matchup “I thought it’d be funny, but it looked like it’d hurt.” King, who attended the game with her boyfriend, did suffer some minor scrapes and scratches, but recalls the moment the hedge swallowed her up, saying: “I was waving my hand, and I heard people around me saying, ‘She’s in the bushes! She’s in the bushes!’ Two guys pulled me out, and I made a face as soon as I got out. I was just like, ‘I really hope nobody got that on video.’” By the time she found her boyfriend, who presented her with part of the hedge, the CBS TV cameras had, unbeknownst to either of them, captured the entire event. Both have heard from friends and strangers throughout the country, and when asked to confirm whether he was, in fact, the guy on TV, King’s boyfriend Dobbs says yes, adding: “Then I tell them that other girl is my girlfriend, and they’re like, ‘No way.’” (link)
Quick Hitters: Missouri State gets a major gift from the Clarke Family, which will see its hoops complex at JQH Arena now bear the family's name. (link); Alaska Anchorage has announced it will move out of Sullivan Arena and begin playing its home games at the smaller Wells Fargo Sports Complex on campus. The move will save UAA $200K per year, according to AD Myford. (link); The Rose Bowl now has an “official ginger beer.” Reed’s Ginger Beer and its varieties will be now be sold throughout the FB season and during The Rose Bowl Game both inside and outside the stadium. Reed’s will also be served at Brookside Golf Club at The Rose Bowl Stadium, available both in the clubhouse bar and at the golf course beverage carts. Reed’s VP of Marketing Martin: “Reed’s and the Rose Bowl Stadium are a natural partnership. We look forward to giving a packed Rose Bowl Stadium a healthy and delicious dose of ginger.” During the 52-week period ended October 26, overall ginger beer sales grew 8.9% to $99.8M. (link)
