During the  2019 General Assembly, lawmakers considered including subsidies for nuclear power in the RPS incentives for renewables. Although we dodged that so far, a study is in the works. Subsidizing nuclear energy would use our ratepayer money to deliver incentives intended for wind and solar to Exelon, the parent company of BGE and PEPCO. In addition, Governor Hogan wants to subsidize new nuclear in his "CARES" plan (summary here) for getting to 100% clean electricity by 2040. Energy efficiency, wind, and solar are far cheaper and safer than investing in new nuclear. (And the problem of what to do with nuclear waste remains unsolved.)  Facebook event.

During this series of community meetings, MDE is seeking comments about its draft Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act Plan. Released a year late, the plan falls far short of what Maryland needs to address our climate emergency. See analysis of the plan from the Sierra Club and the Maryland Climate Coalition.

Climate News

  • Gearing up for the 2020 Maryland General Assembly, Sen. Paul Pinsky says in an op-ed that "Gov. Hogan is paying lip service to our climate-change crisis and doing a disservice to environmental protection efforts that offer real hope for our Earth’s future."
  • Delegate Kumar P. Barve plans to introduce legislation in the 2020 General Assembly to close Maryland's remaining coal-fired power plants. His plan coincides with a Sierra Club poll showing most Marylanders favor retiring these plants and replacing them with renewable energy, not fracked gas. (Because replacing coal with fracked gas is a not progress in a #ClimateEmergency.)
  • Speaking of which: The Global Carbon Project finds that fracked gas is the single largest contributor to this year’s increase in global CO₂ emissions.
  • As the COP25 climate talks began:                                                                         1. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned: “The point of no return is no longer over the horizon. It is in sight and hurtling toward us. ... Our war against nature must stop, and we know that that is possible.”                                               2. A UN report says that "each of the last four decades has been hotter than the last. And far from climate change being a phenomenon for future generations to confront, the effects of humanity's insatiable, growth-at-any cost consumption means millions are already counting the damage."                                                                 3. Also, climate groups warn about relying on carbon market mechanisms.
  • A new report finds that hotter weather linked to climate change increases the risk of preterm births, which can lead to a lifetime of health problems.
