Articles
  • Want to Get Into the Christmas Spirit? Face the Darkness – Tish Harrison Warren, The New York Times – Joyous carols on the radio and the mad crush of shopping malls may mislead people to believe the Christmas season is underway, but this capitalistic frenzy has little to do with the birth of Jesus. The Church's season of Advent encourages us to reflect more somberly on the darkness of the world into which Christ has come and is coming again.
  • The Real Class War – Julius Krein, American Affairs – Ageless antipathy between the poorest Americans and the richest is no longer the most relevant inequality; the political power of the lower 90% of the country has been virtually eliminated. Rather, the top 10% battles against itself: the 1% (or 0.1%) elite with no idea how to utilize its hoard of wealth versus the 9% below them, aspiring to join their ranks by any means necessary.

  • Notes on Summer Camp – Elizabeth C. Corey, First Things – Despite a widespread cultural yearning for freedom and autonomy, the traditions and hierarchies of summer camp offer a helpful structure for life. These types of rituals shape who we are, tying us to the past and to the world outside ourselves.

  • Is American Sprawl Already Bankrupt? – Addison Del Mastro, The American Conservative – Suburban sprawl is not merely an aesthetic problem; it's a way of living deeply beyond our means, demanding public resources vastly disproportionate to its benefits. Beyond the financial drain, it leads to a spiritual bankruptcy of isolation and depression. Charles Marohn's "Strong Towns" initiative offers a helpful way to think about this "long emergency."

  • Gathering the Fragments – Anthony M. Barr, Thinking Aloud – A particularly worthwhile installment of another newsletter we enjoy. Looking at some of the deep divides in modern America – between the Church and the secular world, and between generations within the Church – Barr offers suggestions on how a faithful remnant might steward the pieces of the world they've inherited.
