Hello, 2020. I see you.

All of these end-of-decade roll-ups give me anxiety. Fulfilling resolutions set for the past year is no longer sufficient. Did you accomplish enough in the past decade? Did you radically change your life or explosively grow your business in the face of major structural, social, and technological change?

I did radically change my life and founded two businesses within the past decade. Is that enough? Where’s the goalpost? And who cares?

We’ve returned from turkey-slumber to the mad dash of end-of-quarter/year/decade planning. Meanwhile, we tell clients that change can and should occur at their own pace. Yes, change is inevitable, but even the smallest step forward is worthwhile. There’s no pressure. Try to believe this.

So if you’re also feeling the weight of the next decade’s expectations, here’s a pass. Rather than aspiring to profound changes and commitments, pick just one habit. For one of our clients, that habit will be listening without judgment. Personally, I might focus on being more present. What would be different about your day-to-day if you could take just one thing forward into the ‘20s? Start there.

P.S. – This is our twelfth issue of In Progress. How are we doing so far? Reply to share what you love or what you think we could be doing even better. :)

Whether you identify as an under- or over-achiever, self-proclaimed goals nerd, Karen Borchert, the COO of Flywheel, lays out a goal-setting framework for 2020. Be our team’s accountability buddy?
Here’s a thread worthy of your attention. Ana Noemi argues that the question of whether social platforms are the disease or symptom for the current state of society is beside the point. Either way, society has fundamentally changed, and we must find a way forward.
And speaking of the internet, is it possible to have any original thoughts anymore? Writer Zadie Smith implies that to think for yourself is an accomplishment against an inescapable algorithmic society. Let’s revolt against the algorithms in an antitrust 2020.
“Social media is broken. It has poisoned the way we communicate with each other and undermined the democratic process. Many of us just want to get away from it, but we can’t imagine a world without it.” Is slow media next?
Terry Gross asks Phillip Glass, what will be your legacy? While you continue to mull on the quality of the not-so-distant future, consider what was good in this past decade and what you might want to honor from the 2010s and integrate into the 2020s.
The end of the year also means that it’s open enrollment season for healthcare - fun! (Gulp.) We’re grateful for Shareholder Christine who created a handy and public reference to evaluate healthcare options for single folks living in Brooklyn. We love this open-source approach! Now we just have to tackle taxes.
Shout to Vanilla Forums for upping their game for the 2020 Community Predictions E-Book. This year’s edition features insights from more than 30 community experts, including myself and Sharehold collaborator Carrie Melissa Jones, on community trends in the context of major change: the fall of major social platforms, deep political polarization, the rise of loneliness, and the increased scrutiny of big business. Here’s a quick taste – now go download!
