Health Advocacy Workshop for Pharmacy Students
On November 21st, 110 second year pharmacy students took part in a workshop to learn about different kinds of health advocacy and how they might collaborate with patients, community, and other health professionals to affect change as part of their professional practice. It was part of the Pharmacy Program Enrichment Activity Day program (PEADs). A second session will be offered in January with 115 students.
It was the 3rd workshop in a project to adapt learning resources we previously developed for medical postgraduate trainees to meet the needs of occupational therapy, physical therapy, and pharmacy students since all health professionals have roles as health advocates.
The workshop features real examples of health advocacy from a patient's perspective that help students think about what health advocacy looks like in practice. When asked what health advocacy means, the students ideas shifted from health promotion and raising awareness to being agents of change and working to affect systems level changes.
We are developing new cases to be piloted in the new year. Stay tuned!
