Let's build community around good food and fun!

Feeding America® is the largest hunger-relief organization in the United States. Through a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs, they provide meals to more than 40 million people each year. Feeding America also supports programs that prevent food waste and improve food security among the people they serve; educates the public about the problem of hunger; and advocates for legislation that protects people from going hungry.

Help us fight hunger. For every qualifying item purchased from 12/4-12/17 at our co-op, General Mills will help provide TWO MEALS to Feeding America, up to 250,00 meals or $25,000!  Participating items include Annie’s Mac & Cheese, Cascadian Farm Cereal & Granola Bars, & Muir Glen Canned Tomatoes. Even better, these products are all on sale!

The StrEatery!

Thanks to everyone who joined us for the first StrEatery in October. This event was organized with Land & Ladle, in partnership with COOL Cuisine Davis. We had thirteen local food trucks & pop-ups, offering cuisines ranging from Mexican to Filipino to Hawaiian and more. Local beer and wine were also available, with live music by Boca do Rio.

We also partnered with The Bike Campaign to provide a bike valet to encourage attendees to bike. All leftover food was donated to The Davis Night Market.

It was a very community oriented event with a warm and friendly environment. We are planning another StrEatery for next year.  Stay tuned for the date! In the meanwhile, here are some exciting numbers -designed by Land & Ladle-:
The Davis Food Co-op with the help of the Bike Campaign is now a Bronze Level Bike Friendly Business!
Stay tuned for upcoming bike clinics and events!

Cooking with the Community

Coming soon to our Teaching Kitchen!

Early in the New Year, The Teaching Kitchen will start offering a free monthly class for those who use food resources in Yolo county; Yolo County Food Bank, Aggie Compass, etc.
Following a recipe on a budget can be tricky and often not feasible. These classes will demonstrate how to cook what we have, easy alternatives to recipes, and yummy recipes made with common donation items (like canned tomatoes!)

Fresh Pumpkin Mousse
1 cup cream cheese
1 cup sugar
11/2 cups pumpkin puree (1 small Sugar Pie Pumpkin)
1 tsp. cinnamon
¼ tsp. nutmeg
¼ tsp. ground cloves
1 cup whipped cream
Slice Pumpkin in half, remove seeds and place in casserole dish with 1/2 inch of water in the bottom. Cover and bake at 375 °F for about 25 minutes or until the skin can be easily punctured with a fork. Mash with potato masher or food processor, and let cool.
Mix the cream cheese, sugar, pumpkin and spices. Gently fold in whipped cream. Chill at least 1 hour before serving.

This makes a nice tart filling, or serve it in wine glasses with a little more whipped cream on top. Get creative, and use any small squash we carry!

Round up at the Registers!
