Advanced Public Speaking Class Competes
On Tuesday, December 3, 18 students from the Advanced Public Speaking class participated in the Twin Cities Forensic League Speech Tournament held at Augsburg University in Minneapolis.
Three students from University of Northwestern advanced to the final round of judging. In the informative speaking category, Kayla Madison placed second and Caleb Holt received third place. Arianna Ackfeld received a finalist certificate award for her persuasive presentation. Congratulations to all class members for a job well done!

Senior Abbie Nelson pitched her Alumni Engagement Campaign to Northwestern's Director of Alumni, Scott Anderson, and presented him with a professionally designed campaign case book.

Students in Wendi Marshall's PR Cases & Campaigns course pitched their public relations campaigns and submitted their final campaign case books this week signifying the end of a semester's worth of real-world work. Each student landed their own PR client, conducted primary research, worked with a graphic designer, and created a PR campaign addressing the issue the client chose to address. The final project required a professionally produced case book and a 15-minute presentation.

Christmas Celebration

Xi Xi, UNW's chapter of Lambda Pi Eta,the National Communication Association’s official honor society, celebrated Christmas, the end of the semester, and its graduating seniors on Wednesday night, December 11.
There was a lot of junk food, a lot of laughter, and a cut-throat game of Christmas Bingo led by Xi Xi's vice president, Dylan McNeill.
Jessica Thomas (hiding in the back row) became the first PR maven to win the coveted grand prize, the Xi Xi Unicorn Scepter - symbolizing the special magical powers communication studies, media production, and public relations majors have to grant the wishes of those who are pure of heart.
Xi Xi will be recruiting eligible members starting second semester.

Awards will be held in New York City, NY in March 2020.

Northwestern Christian Writers Conference

Tickets for the 4th Annual Northwestern Christian Writers Conference go on sale Monday, January 6. Current high school and college students are eligible to receive the discounted student rate, which is normally $100, but because tickets are 20% off during the month of January, the student price is only $80!
Ann Sorenson, professor of film in the Department of Communication, will be leading a workshop on screenwriting, meeting with attendees during scheduled 1:1 appointments, and will also be part of the Pro Advice Room.

My good friend and Northwestern Media Director of Concert and Events, Dan Wynia officially retires this week. He’s been working with Northwestern Media for 44 years. Imagine that. 44 years. What an extraordinary and ridiculous run. I’ve had the privilege of sharing just shy of 20 of those years with him. We have laughed, cried, and prayed together on countless adventures. We’ve experienced a half-dozen or so mission trips to Belize with staff and students and spent countless hours together at various conventions. He has been a great gift and example to me. We have also found great joy in our differences. He’s rather quiet, steadfast, and patient. While I am not. Our friendship has been forged through a love of Christ and serving where ever he has put us. There is after all no better place to be.
He didn’t really expect or plan to say anything at his recent retirement party but he did. And what he said I believe has some value for you. He says his 44-year career path has been rather simple. After graduating with a media degree from Northwestern in 1976, he took a part-time job in the Northwestern cafeteria. One day someone wondered why he was doing that and told him to go upstairs to KTIS immediately. So, he did and they offered him a job. Sure, it took him to South Dakota but hey, it was a job! He eventually came back to KTIS in the late 80’s and for the last ten years has been producing Christian concerts for many of the top artists in the industry. He says he never would have dreamed of having a blast producing concerts. Dan says his basic strategy all these years has always been the same: Be faithful. Just Be faithful. No matter what. Good days. Bad days. Be faithful. When God opens a door, faithfully walk through it. When the door stays shut, be patient. A door will open. It might be on the other side of the room but it will just blow right open. Be faithful. Let God direct your path. That’s been the message Dan has prayed for me all these years and I pray it for you. Be faithful.
So, as we approach the spring semester in a few weeks. Stay faithful. God will do amazing things in your life. Rejoice in your sufferings! (The Days are getting longer!) Be patient! (The snow will melt!) Persevere! (Oh, sure that paper you’ll have to write is akin to jumping through fiery hoops at the circus but soon this land of leafless sticks will unfold and burst into green come April. But probably closer to May.) Romans 5 tells us that all this brings about proven character which brings about hope. But not just any hope- a hope in Christ which never disappoints because as the right time he died for us. He is the great high priest who can sympathize with you always. His mercies are new every morning. Be faithful. Someday you will look back and see all the wonderful things God has done.
