Painting Pictures or Pictured Paintings?

Art imitates life and life imitates art...

1: Netanel Schwartz working on his next masterpiece in Intro To Studio Art
Rigorous Academics means more than just Math, Science, Humanities, etc. It means building a whole person who is well-rounded, tapped into his multiple intelligences, and ready to take on the world using both sides of his brain. As such, SCY High's graduation requirements are aligned with the University of California's A-G admissions requirements, which include at least one year of Visual and Performing Arts. Over the years, we have proudly offered our students courses designed to fulfill this requirement and encourage our students to tap into their creative side through various artistic media. This year, at the request of the student body, we partnered with renowned local artist, Andrea Rushing, to create a new course offering: Intro To Studio Art. This course, which has been fully approved by the University of California, gives students the chance to explore and get a foundation in drawing, charcoal, painting (with both acrylic and oil), pastel, and sculpture. The students have been raving about the experience, and we couldn't more proud to see them creating beautiful and soulful masterpieces in each of the varied media they are studying. We hope to feature more of their work as the course progresses!

2: Students studying Gemara as part of the "Bekius Chabura"
How many high school students do you know that would elect to spend their free time studying a 2,000-year-old, foreign language text that discusses the inner workings of ancient courts? Well, at SCY High, a consistent group of students do just that, not just once, but 4 times a week! Twice a week during lunch, once after school, and once during their elective period, students voluntarily come together to study Masechet Makkot and discuss related topics with Rabbi Loffman. They move at a consistent pace through the text and expect to make a siyum by the end of the year!

3: Raphi Shpitalnik "comes to visit" from his dorm room in Israel
As a Zionistic school, we actively encourage our graduates to spend a gap-year in Israel to better connect with the land, people, language, and Torah of Eretz Yisrael. Although it is a life-changing experience for the graduates, many of whom end up deciding to make Aliyah, it is always hard for those of us who are left missing them back here in San Diego. Thankfully, with technology, our boys in Israel (and the world-over) stay in close touch both with their peers and teachers on a regular basis, so "visits" like this are actually quite common and definitely make the transition easier for everyone. We miss you, Raphi!

4: Nearly 400 thank-you letters ready to be mailed to contributors to our recent "Charidy" campaign
At SCY High, one of our core values is Hakarat Hatov (gratitude). We know that none of the amazing things that happen here every day would be possible without the amazing community of supporters that make it all possible with their financial support. We, therefore, feel that it is critically important to express that gratitude in real, tangible ways. That's why we aren't satisfied with the automated email receipts that our donors received when they contributed to our campaign - we do our best to send each donor, whether they donated $1 or $1,000+, a personal thank-you letter, hand-signed by Rabbi Adatto, expressing our gratitude for their support. If you supported our campaign, keep an eye out for yours, and thank you!
