BOOK TALK BY AUTHOR:
TONY PLATT
Beyond These Walls: Rethinking Crime and Punishment in the United States

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 5 PM, FREE

THE STATE OF INJUSTICE IN THE UNITED STATES
Since January 2017 when Donald Trump became president, there has been a shift to the right in criminal justice policies in the United States. Drawing upon his latest book, Beyond These Walls: Rethinking Crime and Punishment in the United States, Tony Platt assesses these changes and asks:
  • How did the Trump administration reinvigorate the politics of law and order?
  • How is it different from a long tradition of bipartisan support for expansion of the carceral state since the 1960s?
  • What is old and what is new about recent developments?
  • And what are the chances for a revitalization of progressive and radical visions of social justice?
Tony Platt, a criminologist and sociologist, is the author of twelve books and 150 essays and articles dealing with issues of criminal justice, race, inequality, and social justice in American history. READ MORE.

BOOK PRESENTATION BY AUTHOR:
MARK STATMAN
Exile Home — Poetry

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 5 PM, FREE

Mark Statman’s new book Exile Home is a love poem, a snapshot, to the poet’s adopted country so fresh in the poem “Mi México”. The air, the light, the poignancy of little girl with wooden bowl, & mystery of life next to another, a beloved partner, buzz with sharp grace. A contrast across the border, with family loss, but no walls, here. Power of “all the unseen… writ in glass in water clouds” join the fiesta. No ideas but in things. I want to go there too. This is a sweet and pungent sensory exile, almost a dream.
—Anne Waldman

Mark Statman (born 1958) is an American writer, translator, and poet. He is Emeritus Professor of Literary Studies at Eugene Lang College the New School for Liberal Arts in New York City, where he taught from 1985-2016. He has published 10 books, 5 of poetry, 3 of translation, and 2 on pedagogy and poetry. His writing has appeared in numerous anthologies and reviews.

AMARANTH COOPERATIVE TOUR

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 9 AM - 4 PM
MX$350 (M) MX$400 (NM)

Known to the Aztecs as huāuhtli, amaranth is thought to have comprised up to 80% of their energy consumption before the Spanish conquest. Because it was also used to prepare ritual drinks and foods, the Conquistadores banned its cultivation for religious reasons. Nowadays, though, a new appreciation for the nutritional value of the crop has brought a resurgence in the cultivation of amaranth, as we will learn on this tour. CLICK HERE to learn more.

Afterwards, we will stop for lunch at the Hacienda Santa Martha, which offer an incredible all-you-can-eat buffet featuring dozens of tempting dishes. (Note: tour price does not include lunch, which will cost approximately 200 pesos for food and beverage.)

NOTE: On the Tuesday evening prior to the tour there will be a presentation at OLL by Jim Bach, Executive Director of Puente a la Salud Comunitaria.
