Holiday Hamper Drive

The EMJS Hamper Drive is happening next week! In partnership with the Stan Hagen Centre for Families and our school counsellor, Katie Campbell, we are putting together holiday hampers for 7 local families, and here are 4 ways your generosity can help:

1. Make an online donation at: https://emjs.hotlunches.net Funds will be used to purchase wishlist items, grocery gift cards and some food items that will fill the hampers. Donations will be accepted right up until Dec 20th. If you don't have a hotlunch account, use the code EMJS to login. Once you login, go to the Student Orders page (under the Orders tab) and there you will find the option to "order" an online donation.

2. Have your child(ren) bring in a new personal care item such as warm socks, gloves/mitts, soap, tissues etc (see photo below for more examples) to their class by FridayDec 13. We will add these to the hampers and extra items will be donated to Our Place as care packages for the homeless.

3. Have your child(ren) bring in a loonie or a toonie to their class on Friday, Dec 13th. These funds will be combined with our online donations to purchase items for the hampers.

4. Volunteer to help us shop for hamper items, wrap presents or deliver a hamper to one of the families. If you would like to volunteer, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080f45acac2da2f85-hampers

Our adopted families and some of their wish list items include:
  • Family #1: Mother, Father and two boys (ages 7 and 2) - parents need winter jackets and the boys would love socks, PJs, a soccer ball/cleats, and maybe a run bike for the youngest (do you have one in good condition that your child is finished using?)
  • Family #2: Single Mother and two boys (9 and 10) - family would love passes to visit something like the museum, IMAX, flying squirrel, miniature world, or similar
  • Family #3: Single Mother and two kids (boy 13 and girl 10) - family would love some rec centre passes
  • Family #4: Single Mother and three children (boy 7, girl 14, girl 15) - the girls and mom need some new clothes, and the boy would love a onesie PJ and a Mario or Sonic stuffy
  • Family #5: Mother, Father and three children (boy 4, girl 9 and girl 11) - this family would love a coffee maker, the girls had a long list of trendy toys or clothes that their friends have that they would like to have too, and the boy needs shoes and would love anything PawPatrol or Toy Story
  • Family #6: Single Mother and three kids (girl 8, boy 16 and boy 17) - a GC from Mayfair or Walmart would be great to get some much-needed clothes and a pass to the movies or other experience would be a wonderful family treat; the girl would love to own a pretty frilly sort of dress and an LOL toy
  • Family #7: Single Mother and daughter (age 8) - daughter would love books or crafts
We will do our best to stretch your donations to give each family something on their wish list. If you have an in-kind donation of one of the above items, please contact emjs@hotlunches.net so we can coordinate. Thanks for your help making a difference in all these people's lives!

Holiday cards and gifts for teachers and admin staff
  • Thank you to the class parents for organizing holiday cards and gifts for EMJS teachers! The box with the cards is on the PAC table outside the office. In addition to signing the card for your child's teacher, please take a minute to sign the cards for the EMJS admin and staff. You can find these cards at the back of the box on the PAC table.
  • Please give all money for teacher gifts to your class rep. The office cannot accept money for teacher gifts. If you cannot reach your class parent, please email us at exec@emjspac.ca and place the money in an envelope with the teacher's name on it and put the envelope in the locked box on the PAC table outside the office. Thank you!
Do you have concerns about your child's screen time and internet use?
  • If so, please attend our Parent Education Night on Tuesday January 14 at 7pm. The EMJS PAC is hosting MsShannon Husk who is a registered clinical counsellor and Prevention and Community Engagement Service Provider around the area of technology and internet safety etc.
  • Shannon currently works for BC Responsible Gambling doing outreach and prevention work in the community with any individuals and their families that struggle with issues around screen time, social media, video gaming and gambling.
  • Shannon will present information related to children's screen time and internet safety, share helpful resources and websites, and answer your questions. Childminding will be available for children aged 3+. We hope to see you there!

Bake sale containers ready for pick up!
  • If you provided treats for the bake sale at the Fall Dance or the Make Sale and weren't able to pick up your container after the event, please check the PAC table outside the office. There are some containers on the table and others in a bin under the table. Thanks!
What are some easy ways to help raise funds for the PAC?
NEW: You can let us know if you need an EMJS Thrifty Foods Smile Card or a Fairway Market Community Card on our https://emjs.hotlunches.net site where you order lunches, and we will order one for you and arrange to send it home with your child in a few weeks.
  • Your EMJS Thrifty Foods Smile Card can be loaded every time you shop and Thrifty Foods generously donates 5% of what you load on the card back to our school! We are fundraising for a gym projector that is high on the school's wishlist ($6000). Every little bit helps!
  • Load up your EMJS Fairway Market Community Card and use it at Fairway Markets the same way as the Smile Card.
  • When buying bread at Cobs Bread on Oak Bay Avenue, tell them you have a “Dough Raiser” account under the name “Margaret Jenkins”.
  • When buying shoes at Finn & Izzy on Oak Bay Avenue, tell them you would like to support Margaret Jenkins school.
  • Before your bottle returns are processed at any Return-It Bottle Depot location, let the attendant know you would like the payout to go to “École Margaret Jenkins PAC”
