SIS WEEKLY
深圳蛇口国际学校周报

Dear SIS community,
What a fantastic day we had for the International Winter Bazaar. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who turned out to celebrate our many cultures. The food, drink, costumes and entertainment were much appreciated by the many people in the crowd. Our school certainly looked great for all our visitors.
Again, our PSA managed a great event which showcased our supportive community.

I had the pleasure of listening to Tony Wagner this week thanks to our colleagues at Tencent and Avenues. Tony has written several books about how important the skill of innovation will be for success in the future. He has also gathered an audience from his Ted Talks. Being innovative, and having an understanding of entrepreneurship are going to be critical for the future. Helping our children to be creative thinkers who can design great solutions to problems is what schools and families should be doing to prepare our children for the 21st century. It was gratifying to hear Tony speak about the things that are important for children and parents to know, because they are exactly what SIS is committed to.

This week, for example, I was thrilled to watch presentations by Movers and Makers in our secondary campus. Watching groups of students present their projects that had been conceived and marketed was inspiring. This is the design thinking that produces successful adults of the future. Our school has many ways that a student gets to practice innovation, creativity and design and I am very proud of our students for their thinking and our teachers for inspiring them.

Tony also spoke about the power of quiet time for children where their imaginations can be trained. Your child's imagination and creativity need as much attention as their reading and math skills. Allowing time and space to  be playful helps create the innovators who will lead the world.

You can find out more about Tony Wagner at http://www.tonywagner.com/

Best regards

We Have Good News to Share...

Great job by our Grade 6 and 7 students who participated and presented to a panel of judges in the Tycoon Competition Pitch Event. The pitch event was the culminating project for SIS middle school's entrepreneurial class, "Movers and Makers." The class featured four groups, who had gone through the process of designing, strategizing, implementing a business plan, and attempting to create a working product, service, or retail model. Students created their business from scratch, then applied for seed money from the Peter Jones Foundation, based in London. The winner of the competition will have the opportunity to go to Buckingham Palace in June for a special event.
