The Road to Unhelpful is Paved with Good Intentions

Every Monday, we share bite-sized treats to kick-start your week.

These are worth your attention this week:

  1. BLOG: This week's blog post "The Road to Unhelpful is Paved with Good Intentions" explores why our attempts to help someone can often do the exact opposite. Whether you're a manager, leader, coach, parent or human being, you'll want to read this.
  2. VIDEO: For a bit of light relief, and some inspiration, here's "Help!" by The Beatles. Turn it up loud, and sing along like no-one can hear you!
  3. BOOK: Our blog this week was inspired by a new book from one of the pioneers of the coaching profession (he started back in the late 60's), Richard Boyatzis. In "Helping People Change: Coaching with Compassion for Lifelong Learning and Growth", Boyatzis, along with co-authors Melvin Smith and Ellen Van Oosten, take a very accessible and engaging look at the art and science behind 'help'.
  4. QUOTE: While attending the HBR book launch for "Helping People Change" last week, author Richard Boyatzis shared a great quote with us. When he suggested to the CEO of a major corporation that the way to increase employee engagement was to allow employees to dream more, the CEO objected: "But what if their dreams don't involve working here?" to which Boyatzis replied, "In that case, they already don't!"
  5. INQUIRY: In this week's blog we invited you to think of someone that changed the course of your life by encouraging you to dream. Who's list will you be on?
If this email made Monday bite a little less, please consider sharing it using one of the options below. If it didn't, let us know how we can improve it by replying with feedback.
