Europatat at Fruit attraction & Variety Days 2019
To continue its mission as the single voice for potato traders in Europe, Europatat has recently attended two key events for the European potato sector: Fruit Attraction in Madrid (Spain) and the Variety Days in Emmeloord (the Netherlands). Whilst Fruit Attraction has become a key event for the potato sector in terms of planning the year ahead, the Dutch Potato Variety Days have consolidated is position as a unique tradition where potato breeders present their new varieties. Europatat welcomes 3 new members!
The German family business Ester & Loibl, the British distribution company Produce Plus and the Spanish packer Patatas Meléndez have recently joined the Europatat family. With these three new members, Europatat’s membership is composed by 18 national associations, 39 companies and 5 associated members. Global Britain Conference 2019
On 22 October, Europatat participated at the AHDB’s annual export conference, Global Britain, in London. Throughout the day, a line-up of experts discussed some of the most important and timely topics facing industry today, including UK trade discussions, new market access and the short- and long-term impacts of Brexit. In the session dedicated to crops, Triona Davey from SASA, The Scottish Government, gave a talk on Brexit, and the possible implications for the seed potato trade, where Europatat had the opportunity to share with participants its activities at EU level to defend a frictionless trade for the potato sector. Views and facts about EU’s trade policy
On 20 and 21 November, Europatat attended the presentation of two important reports: The Special Eurobarometer on EU trade policy; and the third Commission’s annual report on the implementation of trade agreements. Whilst the first one focuses on the EU citizens’ opinion on International trade (60% of them feel that they personally benefit from it), the second provides an annual overview of the EU’s 35 largest preferential trade agreements that are currently in place. The conclusion from both reports is clear: The impact of international trade on the environment is of top concern for citizens, businesses and policy-makers!

World Food Day: our actions are our future
On 15 October, Europatat attended the event “Investing in Nutrition: Partnering for Action”, which was organised in the European Parliament by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and MEPs Soraya Rodriguez Ramos and Paolo de Castro. As overweight and obesity rates soar worldwide, this year’s World Food Day specifically called for action to make healthy and sustainable diets available and affordable to everyone.

Importance of plant breeding innovation for sustainable agriculture
On 19 November, Europatat participated in an event entitled “Growing the Future Together: breeders and farmers underline the importance of plant breeding innovation for sustainable agriculture”, organised by Copa-Cogeca and Euroseeds, under the auspices of the Finnish Presidency of the Council. The different interventions outlined the challenges and opportunities for plant breeding innovation in the EU and provided an occasion for an open and constructive dialogue. Save the date: Europatat Congress 2020
On 11 and 12 June 2020, the Europatat Congress will be back in Brussels with a one-and-a-half-day business programme focused on the digital era. Under the title “A new age for potatoes”, the Congress will explore the possibilities and barriers to successfully make the most of digitalisation in the potato sector.
