The Pearl Beach GEM
The President's Report

The Association held its Annual General Meeting in October, and members were I hope reassured that the management and financial affairs of the Association are in a healthy state.  The members of the Executive Committee were re-elected with the exception of Secretary Gabby Crompton, Jane Clarke and Di Swalwell, who stepped down.  Gabby, Jane and Di all made significant contributions to the work of the Executive during their time on the committee, and we thank them for this.  We also welcome new members Rebecca Jacobs and John Haymes, and look forward to working with them.  There remains a vacancy on the Executive, so I encourage any members of the Association interested in becoming more involved with the work of the committee to contact me.

With Christmas just around the corner, we can look forward to another busy program of events in Pearl Beach to mark the festive season and the New Year.  Members should look at the calendar on the Association’s website for the next couple of months, but prior to Christmas Day we have the Community Christmas Dinner and Community Carols, followed by the Family Bingo and the regular Summer Reading Book Sale.  The Australia Day Kids Beach Races and barbecue are on Sunday 26th of January, and will follow the community based format that we have developed over the last couple of years with great success.  There are also any number of Christmas street parties and sporting and social club events planned for December.

On a more serious note, as we head into another summer that promises to be both long and dry, we continue to be grateful for the wonderful work of the men and women the Rural Fire Brigade and the Pearl Beach Safety Advisory Group (PBSAG).  All residents are urged to make themselves aware of the Neighbour Alert system for alerting the community about the impending danger posed by bush fire, and to prepare their own Bushfire Survival Plans.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I wish all of you a very happy Christmas and New Year, and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at these events. — Peter Romey

Pearl Beach Rural  Fire Service

During the past quarter the Pearl Beach Brigade has been called out approximately twenty times to incidents and as a member of a Strike Team to fires on the Central Coast.

During extreme fire hazard days a crew is normally based at the Fire Station ready for a rapid response call out.

A Get Ready Day was held at the Fire Station on Saturday 17th November,
this was well attended by local residents.

The Community Fire Unit team, following training, is reaching operational readiness. The Unit will provide a first line of defence against spot fires in the village.

PEARL BEACH PROGRESS ASSOCIATION 90th ANNIVERSARY

TIDES OF TIME EXHIBITION 1929 - 2019

This exhibition tried to capture how the Pearl Beach Progress Association has contributed to the uniqueness of Pearl Beach village life and influenced activities for the last 90 years. It aimed to reflect and pay tribute to the many people who have made such a valuable contribution to the 90 year history of the Progress Association and to Pearl Beach village.

We celebrated their hard work, achievements and milestones, and highlighted their stories, memories and recollections.
Whatever their involvement, whether as a leader, an organiser, a regular doer, occasional helper, or someone who joined in and took part, all played a role in making the Association successful over many decades and building an enduring sense of community within Pearl Beach.

Oral History Project – Stories of Pearl Beach

An exciting project that involved conducting a series of 63 personal interviews of current and past residents over this last year to produce a video and audio podcasts by Pearl Beach film makers Rachel Shea and Andrew Frost. This project has been supported by a Heritage Grant from Central Coast Council.

THE FILM IS AVAILABLE TO VIEW ON YOUTUBE:

ARTISTS TRAIL

13 art and craft locals opened their homes or studios to the general public as part of the 90th weekend celebrations and all commented what a great day it was.

Feedback was extremely positive with this new initiative for Pearl Beach artisans.
It appears that visitor numbers ranged from 100 to many hundreds who enjoyed the trail and made purchases.

The artisans are now talking about the next one!!!

PEARL BEACH HOTDOGS ON PARADE
8th September
'Paws for a Cause' was held to raise much needed funds for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT.

A parade of working Guide Dogs and puppies in training mesmerised all that attended. Central Coast Guide Dogs Support Group also had a merchandise stall at the event.
Fun and laughs were had by all-this not at all serious dog show. Some of the handlers were even sin binned by the judges for their misbehaviour. Hot dogs, a raffle and ‘Paw traits’ (photos of dogs and their owners) were available on the day.

Wonderful sponsorship from local and other organisations and businesses and money raised on the day enabled a total of $5,500 to be donated to Guide Dogs.

A big thank you to all who helped co-ordinate the event and in particulalr to the local community and their friends who participated  in such a great day.

Pearl Beach Community Day Out
21 September 2019
More than 35 folk from Dunecare, Bushcare and the community met at Coral Crescent for 2 hours of solid work on the dunes and North Coral Crescent.
Led by Annie, Donna, Greg, Keith and Stephen, teams moved through the Dunes all the way to the shop and at North Coral through to the coastal dunes.

It was a resounding success and there was a terrific tounout. A great big thank you to everyone who volunteered, especially Karen and James who provided sustenance in the form of a BBQ.

JAZZ IN THE ARBORETUM
 Sunday 6 October 2019

Jointly presented by the Pearl Beach Progress Association and the Crommelin Native Arboretum Committee ‘Jazz in the Arboretum’ featuring John  Morrison and his  ‘All Stars’ and the ‘Australian Institute of Music Big Band’.  Many people thought it was the best concert yet, however the lower than expected numbers were disappointing.

DO YOU HAVE THIS APP?

EMERGENCY + APP

FOR IPHONES AND ANDROIDS

The Emergency+ app was developed by Australia’s emergency services to fight a common problem. Most callers couldn’t give their exact location, and the further they were from civilisation, the more vague their info became. Sick of this, emergency services partnered with the Aussie government to release an app that taps into the GPS in your phone. If you’re in a bind, making a call through the app allows you to give the operator the critical location data they need to save you ASAP.

Emergency+ also features a list of emergency numbers beyond 000 and how to use them. The SES, Police Assistance, Crimestoppers and even the Poisons information hotlines make an appearance. It’s free, takes up 6 megabytes and you can never predict when you might need it.
