From boots to Energiesproung and beyond

We keep looking for ways to help spread the word on passive house and sustainable buildings through education and events. This month we are highlighting are upcoming AGM, featuring a talk by researchers, builder and writer Chris Magwood, plus our "Course in the Cloud" on what is called Energiesproung (get started below!), and an upcoming Boots on the Ground. Plus we have some passive house news to share and other educational opportunities.

Thanks for reading and watching!

PBC MEMBERS - AGM JANUARY 15

Our Annual General Meeting which will take place on Wednesday January 15th at 7 p.m. eastern. The AGM is a good time to get an overview of what’s going on in your organization and see how you can participate in making our built world a better place. More details will be sent out mid-December but, in the meantime, please save the time and date.

We always like to combine a good talk with the business of running a non-profit. This year the AGM will be followed by a presentation given by natural builder, author, teacher, and researcher Chris Magwood of the Endeavour Centre: “Opportunities for Carbon Drawdown in Building Materials.” Chris has recently completed his Master's Degree at Trent University's Sustainability Studies program and this presentation will draw on his exciting research.

A COURSE IN THE CLOUD

ENERGIESPROUNG IN THE CANADIAN CONTEXT - UPDATES FROM THE LEADING EDGE
PBC Energiesproung Promo

Join our free "course in the cloud" on Energriesproung!

Energiesproung is a Dutch initiative to reduce the cost of high performance net zero renovation of multifamily and single family project through the use of industrialization, mass production and automation. The goal is to be able to finance the cost of these projects through the energy saved.

In order to explore this concept, rather than the typical webinar, we are trying something different. We have produced three videos on Canadian Energiesproung initiatives, each under 25 minutes. Anyone can watch these videos on our website and on a playlist on our youtube channel plus we have included them below.

On Friday December 13 we will host a one hour online discussion with PBC's Adam Cohen who will be joined by the folks featured in the videos, Peter Amerongen, Marc Carver, and Daniel DiCaire. This discussion will assume all participants have seen the three videos and be focused on addressing questions and having an engaging discussion.

If you would like to participate in this session please get a free ticket here at Eventbrite.

UBC Okanagan campus getting passive house student housing

In September 2020 students at UBC Okanagan campus will have new passive house option for housing. This building, called Skeena, will not use fossil fuels for its operations. According to Kelowna Campus News UBC Okanagan’s former director of campus planning and development who helped to get this project going, Dave Waldron, said “This really is a bold step forward. Part of the beauty of the Passive House concept is its simplicity. Essentially, what you’re doing is making a super-efficient shell compared to conventional buildings.”

First-ever Scorecard tracks provincial energy efficiency progress

Efficiency Canada has launched Canada’s first-ever Provincial Energy Efficiency Scorecard, alongside its companion policy database. The Scorecard ranks provincial policies and performance in energy efficiency programs, enabling measures, buildings, transportation and industry.

British Columbia took top spot in this year’s Scorecard rankings, powered by the BC Energy Step Code, natural gas savings targets, vehicle electrification initiatives, and industrial energy management systems. Leadership in transportation efficiency helped Québec secure second place, followed by Ontario based on energy savings performance and strong policies in areas such as building codes, equipment standards, and building energy reporting. Nova Scotia ranks fourth and received the top score for energy efficiency programs.

Check out the full Scorecard and accompanying database here.
