Pastor of play brings TRUEGRID and more to Common Roots
Carson and Ryan working on the farm.by Jenny Hernandez

He’s a music making, play generating, joy inducing machine and we're so happy that he's a part of our farm family. Reverend Ryan Althaus of Sweaty Sheep Ministry is committed to—and exceptionally skilled at—being a conduit of friendship among all people. He carries a message that worship can look many ways and works to ensure that everyone has access to meaningful human connections and playful adventures.

With a passion for inclusion, Ryan enthusiastically shared the vision of our Every Body Farms GoFundMe campaign with his friends and congregants at Presbytery of San Jose and was able to facilitate thousands of dollars in donations, and over a hundred hours of service amongst his volunteer network, to redesign and provide universal access to our Seed to Salad project.

He is also responsible for making a personal connection with the generous folks at TRUEGRID who just donated enough of their latest permeable pavers to completely cover the entire Seed to Salad farming area! That’s right. Thanks to TRUEGRID and Reverend Ryan, Common Roots will be able to accommodate farmers of all abilities so that every BODY can farm.

Ryan, you are truly a piece of this farm’s roots and your seeds of support will be with us eternally. We’re so excited to continue playing with you. Thank you!
A little help from our friends
Unloading TRUEGRID pavers at the farm. When we got word that our TRUEGRID permeable pavers were scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday, we were both excited and a bit panicked. “Make sure you have a forklift ready to unload the truck,” we were told the evening before!

Common Roots Farm doesn’t have a forklift, but we do have helpful neighbors. Josh Fodor and his team across the street from us at Ecological Concerns Incorporated and the affiliated Central Coast Wilds native plant nursery, generously came to our rescue. Offering his skid steer bobcat and a skilled operator, Josh saved the day! We were able to unload the 5,000 sq. ft. of pavers donated by TRUEGRID, as well as the remaining pallets (33 total!) slated to make our Seed to Salad area fully accessible to farmers of all abilities.

We think Josh and his crew embody the holiday spirit and good, old fashioned values where neighbors lend a helping hand when one is needed. Thank you, Josh, and we hope the generosity you’ve shown us comes back many fold. Happy Holidays everyone!
Greetings from the board

Happy Holidays and the Happiest of New Years to all our families, staff, volunteers, supporters, and friends!

It has been an incredible year for Common Roots Farm and we could not have done it without all of you.

We have continued to grow this year by adding new activities, projects, and products, and continuing to build upon all of our previous efforts. Each season, Common Roots Farm moves closer to achieving its full potential as a flourishing source of locally grown, healthy food and beautiful flowers produced by farmers of all abilities.

Your Board of Directors is excitedly looking forward to next year. We anticipate another very successful year on the farm: new infrastructure development, new talent, lots of activities, and lots of farm produce to share with our friends and community.

Again, we cannot thank enough all of you who have contributed so much time, talent, and support to grow our farm and farm community. We look forward to seeing and working with you on the farm next year.

Janie Whiteford
Common Roots Farm Board Chair, on behalf of entire Board of Directors
