Executive Update

Happy holidays from your MRSA!

With the recent budget cuts and position abolishments, the past few weeks have been particularly difficult for all MRU employees.  We sincerely hope you get a chance to relax, rejuvenate and enjoy the upcoming holiday season.

If you are having difficulties with holiday stressors, job concerns or any thing else, please consider using MRU's Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), offered through Homewood Health. Learn more about the program's counselling and support services here.

Wage Re-opener - Memorandum of Agreement

As you are aware, our current Collective Agreement (July 1st - June 30, 2020) includes an MOA that was negotiated during the last round of negotiations (Wage Re-Opener, page 62). The intent and the spirit of the MOA  was to have an opportunity for the MRSA and our University to engage in a dialogue about wages. Due to the political landscape in our province, the Negotiations Team decided to request that the University “terminate” the MOA. A letter was submitted to the department of Human Resources on behalf of the Board of Governors.

The Board of Governors (and the University) have accepted our proposal to terminate the MOA effective immediately.

Staff Update

There were three position abolishments in November; one in Student Affairs and Campus Life, one in Research, Scholarship and Community Engagement, and one in Teaching and Learning.  All members had representatives from the MRSA present during their position abolishment to ensure that the Collective Agreement was followed, and transitional support services were provided.

Committee Update

Negotiations Committee

The current Collective Agreement between the MRSA and the Mount Royal Board of Governors expires June 30, 2020. Negotiations for the new Collective Agreement will begin in January 2020 and in preparation of this bargaining, your colleagues on the Negotiations Committee are seeking your input on what you feel is important and should be addressed in the upcoming round of negotiations.

Given the current political and economic climate in Alberta specific to post-secondary education, and in anticipation of proposed salary freezes and potential wage rollbacks, we are looking for items of importance outside of a cost of living adjustment (COLA)*. Do you have some innovative ideas or thoughts on where we could make some gains for our membership? We need your input in this process.

Please join us at our next Coffee Chat on December 12. We will then present opportunities to participate in an interactive and collaborative dialogue through two Drop In Sessions on December 17 and January 7 in the MRSA Staff Lounge (W305A). We will also be sharing a Google form to provide your input and see what others are saying.

This is YOUR opportunity to share with us what matters to you. Your Negotiations Committee wants to represent your interests at the Bargaining Table. Please join us on December 12 to hear more about the ways you can be involved in our Collective Agreement.

*Periodic increase in wages or salaries, to compensate for loss in purchasing power of money due to inflation. Rate of COLA is commonly pegged to a general index such as consumer price index (CPI). Also called cost of living allowance.
