Dear Neuroscience Ireland (NSI) Members, Colleagues and Friends,

Its been a busy few months since our last newsletter. NSI has developed a video highlighting some of the outreach activities for 2019, the NSI social gathering at SfN was a huge success and 4 travel bursaries have been awarded. In addition, many NSI members have given talks, received awards and much, much more.

Remember that, if you ever have any news or events you would like us to share with the Irish neuroscience community, please email us at neuroscienceireland@gmail.com.

Wishing you all a great Christmas and all the best for the New Year ahead

Warm Regards,

Michelle and all at the NSI Council.
Neuroscience Ireland President speaks at Royal College of Psychiatrists ‘Brain Camp’ in Belfast
The Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) in London is running a five-year programme sponsored by the Gatsby Foundation and the Wellcome Trust. The Neuroscience Project aims to integrate modern neuroscience into the training and clinical practice of psychiatrists in the UK. Included in the programme are one-day workshops called ‘Brain Camps: Inspiring Excellence in Neuroscience’ that aim to immerse psychiatric educators in cutting-edge neuroscience and more effective ways to teach it. These events are held regionally across the UK and a Brain Camp was held on the island of Ireland for the first time in Belfast on 13 November. The two main speakers at the Belfast camp were Dr. Áine Kelly, Trinity College Dublin and NSI President, presenting the latest developments in our understanding of the effects of exercise on the brain, and Dr David Cousins of Newcastle University, who spoke about imaging techniques. In the same week, the RCPsych held a joint conference with the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland. With such links being made between educators and researchers across the island of Ireland, it is hoped that these events will be just the beginning of ‘All-Ireland’ collaborations in neuroscience and psychiatry.

Dr Áine Kelly said “I was delighted to be invited to speak at the Belfast Brain Camp and to contribute to a training programme that reflects the impact that advances in brain research are having, and are likely to have in the coming years, on the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders. It was also a wonderful opportunity to foster links between Neuroscience Ireland and  psychiatrists working in Northern Ireland”.

Dr Gareth Cuttle, Project manager of the Neuroscience Project said “Many of the participants in our Brain Camp workshops are trainers who teach neuroscience to trainee psychiatrists, which means that the learning from Áine’s presentation will have an impact far beyond the room, in neuroscience training programmes across Northern Ireland.”

NSI Outreach and Public Engagement Video 2019

It has been a busy year for Neuroscience Ireland outreach activities. To highlight some of these activities, Dr Áine Kelly and Prof Richard Roche, in conjunction with Tiger Media, have created a short video which can be found here.

We would like to thank all involved in these initiatives

Dr Una FitzGerald earns Ireland’s first “My Green Lab” Certification
Congratulations to Dr Una Fitzgerald, Director of the Galway Neuroscience Center, and Founder of the Galway Green Labs, has been awarded “My Green Lab” certification for her lab – the only such certification in Europe.

My Green Labs introduce sustainability to the community responsible for the world’s life-changing medical and technical innovations. Labs are one of the most resource-intensive spaces in any industry, but they don’t have to be. By simply introducing a new perspective, My Green Lab has helped tens of thousands of people make a positive change to their work and create a culture of sustainability in the lab. Read more about My Green Lab here.
“Mood Atlas" to screen at NUI Galway
Ishka Films and National University of Ireland Galway present ‘Mood Atlas’ screening Saturday December 14th at 3pm at the O’Donoghue Theatre on NUI Galway campus. This short film describes the experience of living with bipolar disorder and the research underway in the Clinical Neuroimaging Laboratory NUIG to understand the neuroscience behind it. All are welcome to this free event. The project has been funded by the Health Research Board, Knowledge Exchange and Dissemination Awarded to Dr Dara Cannon.

Irish Neuroscience Gathering at Society for Neuroscience 2019
On October 20th Neuroscience Ireland held an Irish Neuroscience Social in Chicago during the annual Society for Neuroscience Meeting. The event attracted a great mix of postgraduate students, early and senior career investigators as well as scientists from publishing and industry. The event, which has now become a regular feature of the Neuroscience Ireland social calendar, is an opportunity for neuroscientists currently working in Ireland as well as neuroscientists who have worked in Ireland in the past to come together and connect in a relaxed atmosphere with their peers. This year Ireland was well represented at SfN with over 40 poster abstracts with Irish affiliations and over 60 attendees at the social gathering, a clear demonstration of the impact and reach of Irish Neuroscience.

Many thanks to the Kerryman Pub Chicago, for hosting us again and of course to all who joined.

We hope to see you again next year in Washington DC.
Scientific Symposium on GABA-B Receptors proposed by Dr Styliani Vlachou, DCU, accepted for FENS2020

A scientific symposium entitled "GABA-B Receptors as therapeutic targets: travelling from synapse to behaviour to… Ithaca" proposed by DCU's Dr Styliani Vlachou has been accepted into the FENS2020 programme. This symposium  will take place on Monday the 13th of July 2020 15.45-17.15.

The aim of this proposed symposium is to unravel the long journey of understanding the role of GABA-B receptors, the most abundant inhibitory G protein–coupled receptors in the mammalian brain, in the central nervous system; from identifying the molecular and cellular diversity of the GABA-B receptors to examining their substantial role in behaviour and neuropsychiatric disorders, such as major depressive disorder and addiction, and their role as possible therapeutic targets for these conditions

Four of the leading scientists in the GABA-B receptor field, at junior and senior level, will be presenting their respective GABA-B receptor work that spreads from cellular/molecular to cognitive and behavioural processes, with a particular focus on depression, addiction and reward.
Speakers: Bernhard Bettler, Kimberly Frances Raab-Graham, Styliani Vlachou, Kevin Wickman
