SUNDAY December 8th –  Not in the Earthquake with Rev. Stephen Cook

A favorite biblical quote refers to a “still, small voice;” this is actually a mistranslation.  The accurate words are more profound, especially in this noisy and busy season.

SUNDAY December 15th – Making Room with Rev. Stephen Cook

The church season of Advent is one of preparing, anticipation, and making room.  As UUs, we may each find differing meanings in this ancient practice.

ALONG THE WAY
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR MINISTER

Here is a poem I like about this season of short days.  I wish for you all the blessings of Advent.

On the Shortest Days
            by Joyce Sutphen

At almost four in the afternoon, the
wind picks up and sifts through the golden woods.

The tree trunks bronze and redden, branches
on fire in the heavy sky that flickers

with the disappearing sun. I wonder
what I owe the fading day, why I keep

my place at this dark desk by the window
measuring the force of the wind, gauging

how long a certain cloud will hold that pink
edge that even now has slipped into gray?

Quickly the lights are appearing, a lamp
in every window and nests of stars

on the rooftops. Ladders lean against the hills
and people climb, rung by rung, into the night.

See you in church,

Rev. Steve

Earth Circles Youth RE Program

The youth religious education program will have its third EarthCircles class on Sunday, December 8. The class will be based on Unit 5: Acquiring Energy - Acquiring Energy: Where does the energy we use come from? How do we use it? How do people across the world access it? In this lesson, we will learn about how energy is used to transport food around the world, and steps we can take to improve the effect on the environment.

We will also begin the class by reviewing the 7 UU Principles, sharing Joys and Concerns, and lighting the chalice. Children will start in the sanctuary and continue in the classroom after Rev. Cook’s Story for All Ages. All children are welcome!

HAPPENINGS IN THE UUA

The stakes couldn’t be higher in the 2020 elections. All our values, our work for justice, the communities we love and the beloved community we seek to create are under attack. Our religious community must speak with moral courage and act with prophetic clarity and determination in the 2020 electoral cycle. Our UU values of interdependence, democracy, and the inherent worth and dignity of all people are direct antidotes to the fear, bigotry, and inequity that define our world. In this political moment, UUs are called to join forces with all people who want to organize our communities and our nation to #VoteLove and #DefeatHate. Let’s UU the Vote in 2020!

Publication Policy

If you have some news or information you would like to get out to people via our twice monthly email or in our order of service insert, or mentioned from the podium on Sunday morning, please get the announcement of 50 words or less to the church in writing via hard copy or email no later than 10 a.m. on Thursdays.  We publish as much as we can weekly and two or three timely announcements will be read aloud during the service on Sunday morning. We ask that announcements be about congregational life, the greater world of Unitarian Universalism, or local community events of importance to congregational life and mission.
