December E-Newsletter

Hello everyone and welcome to the final edition of the Town's e-newsletter for 2019. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Town of East Fremantle staff, volunteers and our community partners for another hugely successful Festival.  George Street never looked better and we were blessed with exceptional weather. Thank you very much to Cr Jenny Harrington, Deputy Mayor for officiating on the day and to Mrs May McGuire and her son Matthew for the Welcome to Country early in the day to open the festivities.

The atmosphere was friendly, with a wonderful community vibe and spirit, a fitting way to welcome in Summer. And with the flick of a switch we are now enjoying a Community Christmas Tree for the first time in East Fremantle’s Glasson Park.  The lights came on as the Festival came to a close for another year - I urge you all to visit Glasson Park in the evening to enjoy the view.
In this edition we provide information about the changes to rubbish and recycling collection over the Christmas/New Year period.  The Town Administration office will close over the holidays, see details below.  Remember, the Fremantle Recycling Centre is available for any excessive recycling you may accumulate during the break, details are also below.
Two new car parking facilities are well underway – the turnaround in John Tonkin Park and the new car parking bays adjacent to the Tricolore Community Centre – information is in the article below.
I was again pleased to be a part of the Town’s Annual Christmas Lunch with our long time-Seniors at the Swan Yacht Club recently.  Congratulations to Mrs Lilian Martin our honoured guest, who turned 100 years of age not long ago.  See a photo of Lilian in the following article.
And finally I thank my fellow Councillors and the staff at the Town of East Fremantle for their hard work during this very busy year.  I would like to wish you all a very safe and spiritually rewarding festive season and look forward to seeing you again in the New Year.

Happy reading - Mayor Jim O'Neill.

Tips to help you reduce waste over Christmas/New Year

1. Give gifts that have long life-spans, can be easily recycled and don’t come in excessive packaging.
2. Give the gift of an experience which will last as a great memory into the future.
3. Buy locally made products and support your local community.
4. Buy quality Christmas decorations that can be stored and re-used or even better, try making your own.
5. Use paper wrapping rather than foil or plastic and save wrapping you received for reuse next year.
6. When entertaining guests, help them separate their waste by labelling your bins.
7. Minimise food waste by only buying what you need, serve smaller portions and store or freeze leftovers.
8. Put recycling in loose, flatten boxes and take soft plastic to Woolworths and Coles REDcycle bins.
9. Donate unwanted gifts or give them to friends and family
10. Don’t forget to use the Fremantle Recycle Centre to dispose of any large recyclable items. For opening hours and items accepted check the City of Fremantle website

Two New Car Park Facilities - work underway

The Town of East Fremantle has engaged Prime Civil to undertake the following car park construction in the Town of East Fremantle:

  • Car parking facilities in Wauhop Road adjacent to the Tricolore Community Centre - approximately 57 new car parking bays
  • Turnaround in the John Tonkin Park Car Park

Work is underway and is scheduled to be completed later this month.  The Town apologises for any inconvenience and asks residents, motorists and park user to take care when in the vicinity of the works.  For more information go to the Town's website here

Fire Mitigation Work Underway

The Town of East Fremantle has engaged contractors to undertake the removal of debris and flammable vegetation from selected areas in the Locke Reserve, Merv Cowan Reserve, Niergarup Reserve and Jerrat Drive Reserve. Town of East Fremantle staff have been liaising with landowners directly adjacent to the affected areas and work is currently underway.  To view a copy of the areas, go to to the Town's website here.

Town of East Fremantle  Bans Glyphosate

The Town of East Fremantle has banned the use of glyphosate based products in all Town controlled public spaces, parks and reserves. Employees and contractors will be required to use alternative weed eradication sprays, such as Localsafe and Slasher, which are both glyphosate free.  Mayor Jim O'Neill said that whilst glyphosate is available, people will continue to use it. The potential risk to residents, children, Council staff, fauna and our pets is easily avoided by not using glyphosate. Council has also made provision in the current financial year budget for the purchase of a weed spraying (foam) unit that does not use glyphosate based products.  For more information please contact the Town via phone on (08) 9339 9339 or email admin@eastfremantle.wa.gov.au

Warning - Red Imported Fire Ant Detection in Fremantle

Surveillance at Fremantle Ports and surrounds is ongoing after an invasive ant species was detected at a tenant property at Fremantle Ports. Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta) is considered one of the world's worst invasive ant species, as it can form ‘super colonies’ with multiple queens that can spread quickly, posing significant threat to the environment, agriculture, the economy, human health and Australia’s outdoor lifestyle. To find out more and about how you can help click here
