Important Compliance Reminder

Multifamily properties are required to have organics and recycling collection services in addition to garbage service.

Alameda County Waste Management Authority and State laws AB 341 and AB 1826 require multifamily properties with five or more units to have recycling and organics collection service.
  • Organic materials that must be COMPOSTED include: food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, non-hazardous wood waste, and food-soiled paper.
  • Materials that must be RECYCLED include bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard.

Setting up Recycling and/or Organics Service

Follow these four simple steps if your property still needs to set up recycling and/or organics collection service. If at any point you need help, request assistance online or call (510) 891-6575 to leave a message for a call back. Your collection service provider may also be able to help estimate service needs and provide training.

Step 1: Check your trash

Look in your property's garbage bin(s) the day before the pickup day to see how much of the trash should be composted and recycled. In multifamily buildings, about 25% of discards may be compostable.

Step 2: Estimate service needs

For example, if your property currently has 4 yards of weekly garbage service and think at least 25% could be composted, multiply 4 yards x 0.25, equaling 1 yard of estimated organics service.

Step 3: Order service changes

Call your collection service provider(s) to start or increase recycling and/or organics collection service, and possibly reduce garbage service.

Step 4: Inform your tenants

Make sure bins are properly labeled and tenants have information about what goes where. Provide reminders at least once a year and when tenants move out. And don’t forget to train new tenants during move in.
