“Advent already and I haven’t started writing cards, buying presents or getting a Christmas tree!”
“Advent already and I have so much work still on my desk which I must clear before the New Year!”
“Advent, the leaves are everywhere, it is wet, windy, cold and dark!”
We symbolise Advent with a wreath – I looked up its meaning, and found that there are various interpretations; the one I like is below:
The wreath is made of various evergreens and signifies life.
The circle (of the wreath) has no beginning or end and symbolizes the eternity of God.
The first candle symbolizes Hope – the hope of the prophets who foretold the birth of the Messiah.
The second candle represents Faith - Mary and Joseph trusting in God’s word and calling for them.
The third candle signifies Peace – God is making peace with His people.
The fourth candle tells us of Joy – the waiting is nearly over, it is time to celebrate the arrival of Our Saviour and King.
The fifth candle (in the middle) announces the birth of Jesus the Christ; the Light of the world, who brings us God’s Love and eternal Life.
Advent, a time of waiting and preparation, a time of expectation and excitement, a time of new beginnings.
Advent, “Be still and know that I am God”. Psalm 46:10
