TCWC Newsletter - December 2019
Dear Watershed Neighbor,

As this year comes to a close, we celebrate our many accomplishments and partnerships. We worked with hundreds of volunteers throughout the year, building on relationships with PCC, Lewis & Clark, Jackson and Markham schools, and local neighborhood associations - and we built new relationships with HAKI, Oregon Refugee Children's Assistance Services (ORCAS), and the Blueprint Foundation. We installed thousands of native trees and shrubs and removed invasive species from several acres.

We hope you share our excitement for this amazing work - much of which was accomplished by volunteers, with almost all funding coming from grants. The remainder of our funding comes from direct contributions and today we are asking that you please consider a tax-deductible donation to help this work continue into 2020.  We stretch every dollar as far as it can go - nearly 85% of our budget goes directly to on-the-ground restoration and community education, as we keep our overhead costs as low as possible. Please visit us here and be part of the solution for our beautiful and unique urban watershed.

Read on below to learn about our new website, recently completed watershed assessment, and upcoming events.  We look forward to seeing you in 2020 - whether it's at a science night event at the Lucky Lab, a volunteer restoration event, or summer outreach in Multnomah Village or at the Oregon Zoo - we know this year will be a great one and we're ready for it!

Working together to protect and enhance our Tryon Creek Watershed,

Watershed Council News:
Website, Assessment & Board Elections

Our New Website is Live!
Visit tryoncreek.org to check it out! Huge thanks go to our board member Sharon Keast, who did a lot of the behind-the-scenes work for this important update.

Watershed Assessment
Danielle Goodrich has been hard at work on her masters project at Portland State University, compiling a detailed, comprehensive Watershed Assessment. At her thesis defense last week, she gave a great overview of the document; the assessment brings together an impressive breadth and depth of information, as well as identifies data gaps, and will have recommendations that will guide our strategic planning process.

Stay tuned: At one of our early 2020 board meetings, open to the community as usual, Danielle will give a presentation of her assessment. We're so grateful for your hard work, Danielle!

Board Elections
At our November monthly meeting, two of our board members were voted in to officer positions. Glen Leverich is our new board Chair, and Megan Hill is our new board Vice Chair! Thank you to Kristie Focht for continuing to serve as our board Treasurer, and Jennifer Jones for continuing to serve as our board Secretary. Our board members are engaged year-round in a variety of ways, and we're deeply appreciative of all their time and dedication. They support us in tabling at community events, advancing permitting processes for fish passage barrier removals, supporting our technology infrastructure, keeping our financial wheels turning, and much more.

#LoveYourWCs Collaboration

When we are at an outreach event and chat with people who live outside of our Tryon Creek watershed, it doesn't mean the conversation is over: it becomes an opportunity to talk about watersheds and watershed councils generally, and to connect people with the watershed council that represents them - whether it's where they live, work, or recreate!

In the spirit or knowing we're stronger together, several watershed councils have developed a collaborative end-of-year giving campaign with fellow councils around the Portland area. With #LoveYourWCs posts coming out weekly until the end of the year via social media, it's a chance for community members to learn and follow stewardship-based organizations across the area and to consider giving to watershed councils near them - as small nonprofits, every donation is deeply appreciated!

Participating watershed councils are Tryon Creek WC, Columbia Slough WC, Johnson Creek WC, North Clackamas WC, Oswego Lake WC, and Sandy River WC.

Moving Office Space

Do you know of available office space in the Tryon Creek watershed where a small nonprofit may fit?  Please let us know by messaging Terri or Alexis!

As many of you know, we've been lucky to share limited office space at the Tryon Creek Natural Area with the Oregon Parks & Recreation Department and the Friends of Tryon Creek.  OPRD has recently remodeled the Nature Center and is now reorganizing its office space, as well.  It's a full house with both their own staff and the Friends of Tryon Creek staff.  We are usually out in the field and office space at the Natural Area is at a premium, so we're moving on - but we will still hold our monthly Council meetings at Tryon Creek State Natural Area on the second Monday of the month, 6-8 p.m.!  These meetings are always open to the public, so please join us to learn what's going on in your backyard and neighborhood, and to visit the beautiful new Nature Center at 11321 SW Terwilliger Boulevard, Portland.
