This Week in Berrien Skies

Earliest sunset of the year Monday, December 9, at 5:13pm.
International Space Station passes The ISS makes two high passes over Berrien County this week. Both last about seven minutes. The highest of the two will occur on the evening of December 11, appearing in the west-northwest at 5:49 pm, rising to an altitude of 75° at 5:52 pm in the southwest sky, and finally disappearing toward the southeast horizon at 5:56 pm. As you observe its passage, think of our fellow humans aboard.
Moon in Taurus All through the night of December 10, look for the Moon to swing through the arrowhead-shaped Hyades Cluster in the constellation Taurus.
Full moon Thursday, December 12
Geminid meteor shower peak While you may be able to observe Geminid meteors between December 7 and December 17, the shower peaks in the hours after midnight on the morning of December 14. This year's shower coincides with a nearly-full Moon, which will wash out the fainter meteors. Still, it can be one of the handful of meteor showers worth getting out of a warm bed for.
