BCCAT Updates for our Partners

December 2019

Happy Holidays from BCCAT!

We at BCCAT would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our post-secondary partners a very happy holiday season, and an especially bright new year in 2020!

This past year, it has been fascinating to look back through the years in celebration of BCCAT's 30th anniversary. These reflections have reinforced the reality of the enduring resiliance of BC's remarkable transfer network, and the vital importance of our ongoing collaboration in support of students. Many thanks to all who work to enable and advance student mobility throughout the year!

WELCOME
Laureen Styles!

We are delighted to welcome Laureen Styles Vice-President, Academic & Provost, Capilano University) to the Council.
Laureen currently holds the position of Vice-President, Academic & Provost, Capilano University. Previously, she taught and served as the Dean of Health and Human Services at Vancouver Island University. Prior to that, she was the Vice-President Academic at the Justice Institute of British Columbia. We very much look forward to working with Laureen!
Lesley Andres:
FRIEND  OF BCCAT

Lesley Andres is Professor of Higher Education at UBC. She served on the Council (2006-2012) and BCCAT's Research Committee (2013-2018).
We're delighted to introduce Dr. Lesley Andres, a true "Friend of BCCAT" and long-time contributor to BCCAT research. As Lesley says, her relationship with BCCAT and her academic career at UBC "have gone hand-in-hand".

From the earliest days of BCCAT, the Council supported her Paths on Life's Way project. The Paths project began in 1989 with the purpose of learning about post-secondary attendance patterns of respondents within one year of high school graduation, by tracing the paths of graduates from the Class of 1988. This longitudinal study continues to answer important questions about the post-secondary patterns of BC learners.

Lesley's work resonates with other BCCAT research findings. Mobile students are often successful in following planned pathways to their desired educational outcome, but many others revise or refocus that destination, or find their path is extended or delayed by external factors like employment, health or family. BC's mature credit transfer system supports BC students over the many changes we all experience in life.

Read more about Lesley's story here.

"The 'Paths on Life's Way' study, which spans 28 years, is unique in Canada and highlights the importance of taking the 'long view' when considering issues of post-secondary access, participation, transfer, and completion."

"Results from the 'Paths on Life's Way' study demonstrate how the articulated, seamless BC post-secondary system -- a system that is fostered through the many activities of BCCAT -- encourages and enhances post-secondary participation and completion."

DID YOU KNOW...

...about BCCAT's very first research publication?

Lesley Andres' first "Paths on Life's Way" project report was published by BCCAT in 1995: Class of 1988: Grade 12 Follow-up. Five Years Later.

This longitudinal study tracing the post-secondary attendance of the Class of 1988 has yielded important and enlightening information about the trajectories of BC post-secondary students over the years. Look out for the 28-year follow-up report due for publication in 2020!

For more information about the "Paths" project, see blogs.ubc.ca/paths
COMING SOON!

What to watch out for in 2020:
  • results from the "Survey of Mobile Students" project
  • launch of BCCAT.ca (redesigned), and enhancements to BCTransferGuide.ca (BCTG)
  • ongoing expansion of the Transfer Credit System to include international and inter-provincial agreements on the BC Transfer Guide
...and more!
