This literacy happens at the public library, through access to information and resources, health programming, and library partnerships. As inclusive spaces that encourage exploring new ideas while reducing social isolation, libraries play a key role in creating healthy communities.

Advocating for Libraries in Alberta

As Alberta communities continue to face economic challenges, trustees need tools to help us make our case and tell our story both locally and provincially, to ensure sustained funding. This year, The Alberta Library (TAL) organized 4 advocacy learning sessions that include advocacy basics, plus talking to MLAs, Municipal Council, and the media. Chicago libraries have gone fine free, joining a growing number of cities trying to make access to libraries more equitable, after data revealed that fines block one in three cardholders in poor neighbourhoods. Overdue fines do not distinguish between people who are responsible and who are not, but between people who can and cannot use money to overcome a common oversight.
