450 native plants find a home on Pendleton Creek!

40 volunteers support restoration project to manage stormwater and enhance wildlife habitat.

Thanks to everyone who joined our restoration event along Pendleton Creek on November 16! An amazing group of volunteers added 13 different species of native plants to over 350 feet of stormwater drainage channel.

This project would not have been possible without the support of volunteers from Riverdale High School, Portland State University, and members of the Hayhurst Neighborhood. We'd also like to thank City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services, West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, Sound Native Plants, the Hayhurst Neighborhood Association, and Peter Katon for all their hard work to make this long awaited project a reality. Stop by and check it out next time you're in the Hayhurst Neighborhood!

West Willamette Restoration Partnership (WWRP) works to support wildlife in our neighborhoods

Learn about the work of the WWRP
at a FREE public event on December 12.

The West Willamette Restoration Partnership (WWRP) is a coalition made up of engaged volunteers, community groups, landowners, agencies, and other organizations. WWRP’s mission is to conserve and enhance the forests and natural areas within the Westside Wildlife Corridor, which is the area of natural and developed space between Forest Park and Tryon Creek State Park.

The Westside Wildlife Corridor provides critical habitat to a wide variety of animals including owls, deer, coyotes, and even elk! The natural spaces within this corridor (like Terwilliger Parkway and Marquam Nature Park), offer much needed refuge to many creatures as they move between Forest Park and Tryon Creek State Park. Some of these animals travel to and from Portland from as far away as Salem or Astoria!

You can learn more about the WWRP, and how you or your organization can be involved, at the next quarterly partnership meeting on Thursday, December 12 from 2-4pm at the Multnomah Arts Center Gym. All are welcome to participate and you can sign up here.
Living in harmony with urban beavers

Tips for living with beavers in your neighborhood
(yes, they could live in your backyard!).

Beavers are particularly active during the fall as they prepare their dams for the winter season. We've noticed quite a bit of beaver activity on some of our project sites, and we recently connected with the Woods Creek HOA to provide protection to trees to prevent beaver damage. With support from Watershed Resource Center and Habitat Restoration NW, residents of the HOA installed fencing around 65 trees, and removed ivy from 35 trees. This work is part of a larger effort to restore creek habitat by removing invasive weeds and planting additional native tree and shrub species to provide ongoing forage and dam building materials for the beavers.

Many streamside properties on the west side of Portland could provide suitable habitat for a beaver colony. If you have beavers living in your neighborhood, check out these resources from City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to learn more about the best ways to support beaver habitat while also protecting your own property.

Residents at the Woods Creek HOA have been working to remove invasive weeds and protect trees from beaver damage.
