Significant Incidents

Burglary - 825 Highland Lane (Storage Unit)
On November 4, 2019, police were dispatched to a larceny call at 825 Highland Ln NE (Carlton Condominium).  A female victim advised she had returned home from an international trip and received an email from the condominium staff indicating that her storage unit across from her condo had been broken into.  The email suggested the condominium staff thought the break-in happened on October 27, 2019 between 2-3:00 AM, but the victim did not haven an explanation for how the staff had narrowed it down to that time frame.    The victim advised that her $800 Tumi luggage was stolen, along with a Home Depot bag full of tools.  Video was not available. Prints were not attempted or obtained because there was not a substantial surface to pull prints off of.  The storage unit was not damaged, but no one other than the victim had access, so it was unclear how the suspects had broken in to steal the items.

Aggravated Assault - 810 North Highland Av
On November 23, just after midnight, police were dispatched to Surin of Thailand restaurant.  A Hispanic male, approximately 5’ 7”, 170 lbs, with short hair and wearing a white t-shirt, jacket and camouflage pants was seen pointing a gun at the restaurant manager while tapping the window and mouthing something unknown.  The manager said the suspect had previously been at the Ocean Wave restaurant and tried to drink there, but when he was asked for ID, the victim got upset and came over to Surin, where he started arguing with the staff there.  The manager stated that the suspect left and came back with a gun and pointed it toward him and some other people, tapping on the window and mouthing something from outside the restaurant.  The restaurant only has camera footage inside, and no other exterior cameras were located in the area.  Police advised the manager not to let the suspect back into the restaurant and to avoid further confrontation by calling police immediately if he was seen again.

Zone 6 Toy drive

For the eighth year in a row our friends at the Atlanta Police Department Zone 6 are collecting toys for children this holiday season. Every year Virginia-Highland residents have been extremely generous and helped APD Zone 6 to make a special holiday for hundreds of children. The VaHi Safety Team hopes you will show this kindness again.

Toys are being collected for children 12 years old and younger, and should be new and unwrapped. All toys must be received no later than Wednesday December 11th.

As in the past, John Wolfinger has volunteered to collect gifts on his front porch at 1054 Vance Ave. Each time he collects a carload he will deliver to the precinct. You do not need to call John in advance, just stop by his house and leave your gifts on the front porch.

If you would prefer, you can also deliver gifts directly to the precinct at 2025 Hosea L. Williams Drive, SE, or we saw a collection bin at San Francisco Coffee (N. Highland and Amsterdam).

Thank you for making the holidays special for so many children in our community!

Volunteer to Meet Your Neighbors!

One of the ways we can help to keep the neighborhood safe is to get to know our neighbors. We have learned that people who know each other, tend to look out for each other. Volunteering for events in the neighborhood is a fun and easy way to get to know more people and this weekend we have two excellent opportunities.

On Saturday evening (December 7th) from 5:00 - 7:00 pm the Virginia-Highland Civic Association is hosting a "VaHi Holiday" event at North Highland Park (corner of St. Charles Place & N. Highland Avenue). We are especially in need of a Santa's Helper (assist Santa and families as he meets with children); Someone to staff the craft table (no skills required, craft kits have been purchased); and someone to help with ornaments and donations (again no skills required). If you can help out, volunteer

Happening on Saturday and Sunday the annual Tour of Homes still has 4 or 5 slots open to help guests at houses. In exchange for your three hour shift, you will receive two free tickets to tour all of the tour homes. Sign up.
