From The Director
Happy New Year!
The library has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season. Thanks to generous patrons like you, RHPL's first Annual Appeal exceeded $5,000. This money will help the library meet some pressing challenges in the next couple years. There are plans for fresh paint, a new roof, and porch repairs. Together with our recent Paint The Octagon campaign and the 18th Annual Trivia Contest later this month, these donations make a real difference.
Thank you also to everyone who supports the library whether it's using the space, borrowing materials, volunteering your time or voting for sustainable library funding. Thank you for understanding that a healthy library is an essential part of a vibrant community like ours.
Grants!
Thank you to Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley, for funding our Advancing Digital Access in the Red Hook Community initiative. With the $3,000 awarded, we will be adding more hotspots to the collection as well as laptops that can be checked out and brought home. Teens will be able to check out public library laptops right from RHHS.
The Ascienzo Family Foundation will be funding two years worth of bilingual programs at RHPL with a grant award of $10,000. These inclusive programs will make the library more accessible to our full community and foster understanding. Thank you!
Big thanks also to Kingston Walmart for funding new furniture and equipment for the teen room this winter -- not to mention a whole lot of Hot Pockets and Bagel Bites!
Finally, thanks also to the Senator Stephen M. Saland Legacy Fund of the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley that generously awarded RHPL a grant of $1,400 to help us take care of the library's iconic building.

With January comes a new lineup of programs for all. Check out some highlights below, including new bilingual programs where se habla espanõl.
18th Annual RHPL Trivia Contest!
Yes, it's the 18th year of this popular fundraising event, coordinated by Karen Sipperley with tireless dedication and a (very) healthy sense of humor. Teams are made up of 5-6 people and cost $20/person. Contact Karen at sippinredhook@aol.com for more information or to register your team. In 18 years, RHPL's own Dewey Decimators team has never won; hope springs eternal.
Events for Adults in December
Hands On: Printmaking
Start of the new year learning about Legendary Codebreaker Elizabeth Friedman over lunch with guest speaker G. Stuart Smith, retired journalism professor and author.
Would your business or non-profit benefit from having a newsletter? Learn to use the free platform Mailchimp to publish an email newsletter from Roger Cohn who published RHPL's newsletter for 5 years.
Do you need a change of scenery from your home office? Use the library's Co-Working Hours where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, free wifi, and get some work done.
Learn a new language in Beginning American Sign Language classes youth 10+ through adults!
Beer & Board Game Night at J&J’s Deli returns! Play new and old table games. Food and drinks are available though no purchase is required.
All Abilities Adults are painting this month. And then competing in the First Annual RHPL Marshmallow Olympics.
The monthly Brown Bag Matinee returns in 2020, as well as the Adult Artists’ bi-monthly gathering. (Hint: You don’t really have to be an artist to attend, you can bring your journal or even your grocery list - there are all kinds of creativity!) Note: Artists' Group is moving to Thursdays.
Events in December for Teens
Teens enjoy new Playstation gaming console
Teen Gaming on Fridays continues in January. Now with a twist: Virtual Reality! Check out the new headset, generously donated by a patron and make some yummy snacks. (Perhaps not at the same time….)
Youth Speaks meets again. This group of teens is putting together a request for the county to fund local projects for youth. Youth 10+ are invited. Pizza is served (of course!)
All Abilities Teens have two options with Teen Science and Teens READ. (It is not necessary to be able to read to attend Teens READ.) AA teens will also want to check out our new All Abilities collection. Located in the teen room, it brings accessible reading levels to more mature subject matter. Search “TEEN AAB” in the catalog for a full listing of titles.
Paul will be busy devising weird and wonderful science experiments for Libratory 2. With a minimum age of 11, this program gives science buffs an opportunity to explore more sophisticated concepts.
Events in December for Kids and Families
A proud gingerbread architect
For preschoolers and toddlers, there’s Bilingual Storytime where you’ll listen to stories and sing songs in both Spanish and English followed by a craft or activity. Esta hora del cuento es para niños y niñas desde bebitos hasta de edad escolar y para sus padres. Se presentarán libros y canciones en inglés y en español.
Another new program for the youngest library-goers is Nursery Rhythm & Rhyme. We’ll make some noise and shake our tail feathers while telling tales. Of course Petit Picasso continues so junior artists can get creative (and kinda messy).
Kids ages 9+ who’re looking for some creative fun after school should register for Art Afterschool. We’ll explore creative self-expression in various styles and media. Also, for kids ages 9+ the Not-Just-Another Book Club is working on their app that features recommendations by kids about books and audio books for kids.
When Mill Road has a half-day in January, the library has a program for kids ages 5 - 10. Explore the seven seas at Half-Day: Under the Sea.
Finally, are you looking for some family fun? Family Storytime is on Saturdays at 11; if you’re at work or just can’t make weekday pre-school programs, come for some fun together on the weekend.
This month, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr Day, the library offers The Civil Rights Movement: An Interactive Family Program. There’s activities and crafts for all ages and learning for everyone.
Finally, join us for a Family Art Party/Noche de Arte Familiar to cap off the month with projects suitable for all ages and abilities. Ven con tu familia 7 amigos a una noche de manualidades en la biblioteca. Habrá proyectos para todas las edades y habilidades

Did You Know?
There is a lot of talk in the library profession about what to call those that use libraries. Some have moved to “customer” or “member.” The former invokes a transactional relationship. The latter is more appropriate for a club where some belong, and others don’t. At RHPL, we believe a public library is a shared community resource that's open to everyone. Las bibliotecas son para todos. Therefore, we say RHPL is made up of a community of patrons!
