2020 Sea Lion Bowl National Ocean Science Bowl CSU Monterey Bay
Sat, Feb 1, 2020 The National Ocean Sciences Bowl is an academic competition and program that addresses a national gap in environmental and earth sciences in public education by introducing high school students to and engaging them in ocean science, preparing them for ocean science-related and other STEM careers, and helping them become knowledgeable citizens and environmental stewards. The Sea Lion Bowl is the regional competition in Northern and Central California. Teams of high school students study to understand how the ocean works and the human connections to the oceans. At the competition, they are able to show off their knowledge and depth of understanding through various question types. Volunteer signups will be open in November. More info here.

MARINE Inter-institution Synergistic Grant Application Deadline: Jan 15, 2019 The Coastal Science and Policy (CSP) Program at UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) is committed to
preparing future leaders to solve current and emerging challenges to coastal sustainability. As
part of that commitment, the UCSC CSP Program supports Monterey Area Research Institutions’
Network for Education (MARINE), which has been an integral part of leadership and
professional development in the Monterey Bay area since 2009. The purpose of MARINE is to
prepare future ocean leaders for interdisciplinary, real world problem-solving, and is a
collaboration between seven Monterey Bay area academic campuses (CSU Monterey Bay,
Middlebury Institute for International Studies at Monterey, Moss Landing Marine Labs, Naval
Postgraduate School, UCSC, Stanford, and Stanford Hopkins Marine Lab).
In conjunction with MARINE’s overarching mission, CSP has committed funds to support
graduate student leadership development through student-led projects that foster interdisciplinary
collaboration across campuses with broader policy, community, and societal outcomes in ocean
and/or coastal related issues. Proposals must clearly define outcomes of the inter-institutional
collaboration, which will be presented to the entire MARINE community at the Fall 2019 kickoff event. The CSP Program is offering a maximum of $500 per award (up to 2 awards per year)
and requires a one-to-one match (in-kind or cash), whereby the matching funds come from

Davidson Graduate Fellowship Application Deadline: Dec 20, 2019 The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is pleased to announce an opportunity for graduate students in the social and natural sciences to apply for a two-year Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Fellowship to tackle complex challenges in the nation’s estuaries and coastal communities. The Fellow will work with one of the nation’s 29 National Estuarine Research Reserves alongside a mentor, fellow scientists from diverse fields, and local community leaders and decision makers as the team addresses coastal challenges. The Davidson Fellowship includes networking opportunities and career-readiness training. Graduate students currently admitted to or enrolled in a master’s or PhD program at an accredited US college or university with at least two years remaining in the program. Students must be US citizens or permanent residents of US states or territories to apply. While there is no required field of study, applicant qualifications should be appropriate to complete the proposed research project. Delta Science Fellowship Application Deadline: Dec 20, 2019 The Delta Science Fellows Program (previously known as the CALFED Science Fellows Program) was established to bring together graduate students and postdoctoral researchers with Bay-Delta agency scientists and senior research mentors.
