~ THIS FRIDAY ~
Reynold Philipsek with
Matt Senjem
Fri Dec 6
7:30
Bo Diddley's
$14 ticket
Plus service fee
Main Series
Guitarist Reynold Philipsek is a prolific composer with a very wide range of styles and influences: gypsy, bebop, and straight-ahead jazz; the Great American Songbook; Nuevo Tango; 20th century classical; even a dash of rock. Matt Senjem is a wide-spectrum jazz bassist who often plays with Reynold in band settings--Sidwalk Cafe, Gypsy Mania, East Side, and Twin Cities Hot Club--as well as at duo gigs like tonight's.
"It's sort of like Django gypsy meets '60s beat-gen hippified funster music. . . . Highly energetic guitar music that will keep you flying for days." --Dick Metcalf, Improvijazzation Nation
"Deft and beautiful acoustic guitar wizardry." --Tom Surowicz, Minneapolis Star Tribune
"A Midwestern original whose writing style is a sort of twisted blend of Edward Hopper and Randy Newman. He's a guitar player of some ability, to boot." --CMJ Network

Tim Fast
trading songs with
Charlie Roth
Fri Dec 20
7:30
Bo Diddley's
$10 ticket
Plus service fee
Main Series
Tim Fast could be a character in one of the gems-of-a-song he writes
and sings. He's a dust-covered man who has traveled the roads in search of whatever song is over the next rise. That sense of adventure has given him a catalog of great original songs that have touched audiences from coast to coast and all the way from his native Minnesota down to the Texas Gulf Coast. Cliff Eberhardt and James Keelaghan think he's cool, and so do we. (Tim thinks that this may be a CD-release concert--though even he isn't sure "it will happen on time." Join us to see the outcome.)
"Excellent songwriter, exquisite guitar player and the sweetest voice I've heard in a long time". --James Keelaghan
"Tim Fast is one of my favorites on the scene today". --Cliff Eberhardt

Curtis and Loretta
Fri Jan 3
7:30
Bo Diddley's
$12 ticket
Plus service fee
Main Series
The music of Minnesota perennials Curtis and
Loretta comes straight from the heart. They are extraordinary and proficient on a parade of stringed instruments, which create an alluring frame for their poignant original songs, and carefully chosen traditional pieces from the British Isles, America, and beyond. Their current instrumental menagerie includes Celtic harp, mandocello, mandolin, guitar, clawhammer banjo, and National steel ukulele, plus a bit of kazoo, harmonica, and shakers.
"Curtis and Loretta are in many ways the quintessential folk duo: finely honed vocal
harmonies of multidimensional intrigue, abundant talent on an array of stringed instruments, deep traditional roots, great originals, and equally strong strains of gravity and playful irreverence." --Rick Mason, City Pages
"Though they write of the common perils and heartaches of life, there is nothing common about the extraordinary traditional folk duo of Curtis & Loretta." --Todd Dawson, Bethlehem Express-Times

David Stoddard & Beth Wood
Thurs Jan 16
7:30
Bo Diddley's
$12 ticket
Plus service fee
Main Series
A pair of multiple-prize-winning singer-songwriters: David Stoddard and Beth Wood are both Kerrwood New Folk winners, and, separately, the South Florida Folk and the Minnesota Folk Festivals (David) and the Sisters Folk Festival Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting and the Wildflower Festival Songwriting contests (Beth). David has shared the stage with Juice Newton, Leon Russell, Rik Emmett, Lou and Peter Berryman, Michael Smith, and Pat Donohue. Beth has opened for Steve Winwood, Michael McDonald, Shawn Colvin, Chris Whitley. Tonight we have them all to ourselves.
"Being compared to Randy Newman isn't a bad thing for most musicians. And Dave Stoddard loves it. . . . His songs are very clever. They can be funny, heavy or sweet enough to draw a tear." --Dale Connelly and Jim Ed Poole, MPR/The Current
"It's not often I hear a songwriter that can write funny and write serious. David Stoddard is
one of the rare ones. I love his stuff." --John McCutcheon
"Beth Wood is a musical triple-threat--a thoughtful songwriter and talented multi-instrumentalist with a supple, soulful voice." --Washington Post
"Wood's real calling card is her voice--a soulful, opera-strength instrument. . . . She has a keen sense of humor, but she also showed a knack for finding poignancy in simple things--such as the comfort of a car radio during long drives in 'Late Night Radio.' . . . A voice and songs this strong are bound to persevere." --Dallas Morning News

Split bill: Chris Holm &
Mike Munson
Fri Jan 24
7:30
Bo Diddley's
$12 ticket
Plus service fee
Main Series
Blues from our end of the Mississipi. Chris Holm, raised in Clearbrook, near the headwaters, grew up on Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Flatt & Scruggs, the Beatles, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Now he mixes all those exemplars with the acoustic blues via guitar, harmonica, and suitcase percussion. Mike Munson, from Winona, counts Son House, Skip James, and John Lee Hooker among his inspirations. He followed the blues to a Bentonia, Mississippi juke joint and brought them back upriver.
7:30 Chris:
"Chris channels high-spirited liveliness, thumping on his suitcase drum, attacking his guitar strings with abandon, and shouting along in a gravelly howl, later to channel the lonesome
sounds of a weeping slide guitar and a blue yodel." --Singlespeed Brewing

8:30 Mike:
"Artistry with an organic and primal passion . . . summons the specters of American Music--from Robert Johnson to Hank Williams--to both possess and exorcise the listener. Munson’s dark and moody guitar picking coalesces with his rich and emotive voice to transport his audience back to the Delta. . . ." -- David Masciotra , No Depression
"Munson proves to be a melodic and complex picker, haunting slide player, and emotive singer. . . . This is as authentic as blues gets. Munson reaches deep." —Jim Hynes, Elmore Magazine

Radoslav Lorkovic
Fri Feb 14
7:30
Bo Diddley's
$14 ticket
Plus service fee
Main Series
OK, a classically-trained, Croation-born accordionist/pianist whose singing sometimes evokes Tom Waits or Randy Newman and who has released an album titled "The Po, the Mississippi." If that ain't broad-church folk/jazz/blues/rock/multi-national music, we don't know what is. When Radoslav Lorkovic isn't playing his own gigs, he's backing the likes of Odetta, Jimmy LaFave, Greg Brown, Richard Shindell, Ellis Paul, Ronny Cox, Dave Moore, Andy White, or Bo Ramsey. Note the Iowa musicians in that list--Radoslav went to school at the University of Iowa, so he's practically one of our own.
"He's like a mad genius. If I know a crowd's not responding, I'll throw a Hail Mary to Rad. His showmanship adds so much flair to a live gig." --Jimmy LaFave
"We've been fans of Radoslav's work ever since, as he glided from set to set, accordion to piano--the go-to sideman at the Woody Guthrie Festival, Folk Alliance International, [and others]. . . . Radoslav's ability to sense the nuances of a performer's next move adds electricity to every show." --Art of the Song, KKFI, Kansas City Community Radio

Donations are tax deductible and offer donor recognition & thanks. This is not a profitable enterprise. Our ticket sales typically do not quite cover musician compensation, much less printing, advertising, theater rental, insurance, etc., etc. We have in recent years been fortunate to receive modest grants to help defray expenses, we have received in-kind donations from our season sponsors, and we have also enjoyed increasing support from patrons such as yourself. Collectively, these are the pieces of the financial puzzle that keep our boat afloat. Please consider a donation. Any amount is greatly appreciated and is tax deductible (minus voucher value).
