UUFB ANNUAL MEETING
Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019
11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
THIS SUNDAY at 11:30 am, we have our Annual Business Meeting. By now, you should have received your Absentee Ballot/Proxy page and Meeting Agenda via email/mail. These documents name the candidates for 2020 leadership positions. Also, the 2020 Proposed Budget is posted on the UUFB website. Look in “For Members Only” under the “Budget” tab. There you can overview the figures.
A great slate of candidates is drafted for the coming year. Appointed by the Board as President-Elect, Jeanine Darville is on the slate to complete this two-year term. Also running for Board positions are Usman Ismail, as Treasurer, and Char Lane as Secretary. For other positions, Carole Gunter is running for another three-year term as an Endowment Fund Trustee; and, Betty Chamlee Miller is running for a two-year term on the Nominating Committee. We appreciate them all for stepping up to these responsibilities and wish them great success.
We will also consider whether UUFB wishes to join other UU congregations in our Coastal Cluster in endorsing the Equal Rights Amendment.
Please join the voting process on Dec. 8th by attending the meeting or sending in a proxy/absentee ballot. Your presence is certainly appreciated.

Join in the UUFB Christmas Carol Sing
Kick off the holiday season by joining the Christian Affinity in a Christmas Carol Sing and Pot Luck. This annual event led by Ben Sellers will be held on Sunday, December 8 at 5:00PM. Bring your voices and a favorite dish!
GUEST AT YOUR TABLE
REMINDER
At the November 24 service, UUFB members and friends received informational pamphlets and small cardboard boxes to put on their dining room table to collect change each time they sit down to a meal. This is part of the annual “Guest at Your Table” fundraiser for the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC).The box with donations will be collected Christmas Eve or Day and sent to UUSC as our contribution to UUSC’s efforts. This year’s theme is “Women Leaders, Strong Communities.”
The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. (UUSC) is an independent nonsectarian 501 c3 nonprofit membership organization, affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association. They are a leading voice for human rights and social justice in the United States and the world. UUSC partners with local organizations in many countries working for justice and improving lives. UUFB is a member and supports this organization through our Social and Environmental Justice Committee.
If you weren’t able to get a donation box, there is one in the foyer of each of our buildings where you can contribute! Thank you for your generosity!
2019 UUFB Auction Best Ever!
This year's UUFB Auction, 50s Fun, Funds, and Fellowship, was a Great Success socially and financially, over $19,000 raised. Thank you to all who donated or solicited donations so generously. You, the Donors, make the Auction successful for without great items or dinners / events on which to bid we have no Auction. We had several guests (invited by members) attending that won some of the "big ticket" items as well as other items and for that we very grateful. For all of you who who got into the Spirit of the Evening by dressing in your best 50s garb you helped to enhance the spirit of the evening.
Thank you also goes to the fantastic Auction team starting with the Registration, Bid Recording, Checkout and Cashier - Finance Team of Jeanine Darville including Beth Moon, Barb Maurer, Carole Gunter, Diane Farrelly, Frank Anson, Grace Drake, Shirley Alexander and Nicholas Ashford.
The Food was expertly prepared and presented by Mal Martino and her team of Barb Banus, Frank Anson, and Julia Peters, who fell in love with the Popcorn Machine, bringing back memories of our childhood and teenage years. The Ice Cream Sandwiches made a delightful end to Silent Auction bidding which was creatively displayed and tallied by Jim Miller, Kathy Folsom and Grace Drake. The Drinks team of Davis Folsom and Rom Funderbuck served us all and made sure everyone had a enjoyable and safe time courtesy of the wine, beer and soft drinks provided by members.
Jan Spencer, Master of Ceremonies, welcomed everyone and started off the Live Auction with our traditional song. The action was then expertly guided by our great Auctioneer, Tony Barbagallo, and Kathy Folsom's colorful, artful and often humorous displays in the Slide Show of the items / events up for bid. Tony keeps the tempo moving with great aplomb and generates excitement for everyone to enjoy whether you are bidding or not.
Last of all, Char Lane and Rom Funderbuck kept us entertained with "Name that Tune" testing our knowledge and singing skills while the all the bids were tallied for checkout.
And oh about those Decorations, JW Eads created, lighted and installed the Movie Marquee that several attendees asked about where we had rented it. The movie "Rebels with a Cause" seemed to embody the spirit of our Fellowship members. Char Lane created the table decorations that complimented the overall 50s Diner theme of the evening dreamt up by Char, Jinny and JW Eads.
Despite the cold and rainy weather, Steve Burton and his ACIS team made sure all the cars were parked and people were guided back to them at evenings end.
The Auction takes a team of people with many different skills and this year's Auction was no exception. For that I am always in awe of the talents and generosity of our members.

Braving The Wilderness Book Groups Forming!
As we know, Minister Emeritus, Rev. Nan urged us in her sermon during Founders Weekend to read Brene Brown's Braving the Wilderness together. Rev Lori has embraced this idea. In chatting with many of you, there is a lot of interest in doing just that. We are planning an organizational meeting to find out just how many of us are interested and how we would like to proceed. The organizational gathering will be Sunday, December 15th at 11:30. Because we are expecting that there may be quite a few of us, we may need to break up into groups, based on our needs and interests. We hope to have the book group(s) begin in January.
Several approaches to reading and discussing the book can be considered:
- A one-time discussion upon completion
- A four - six part discussion every other week as we read.
- Shared facilitation
- Group sizes: 6-10 members
- Choose one or more possible meeting times.
- Consider using Quaker, Parker Palmer's Circle of Trust Touchstones as a guide for discussion.

THE CHRISTIAN AFFINITY GROUP
PLANS BOOK DISCUSSIONS FOR 2020
The Christian Affinity Group met on November 3, 2019 and had a lively discussion of books for reinterpreting Christianity. Members suggested a wide variety of excellent books and decided on the following to read and discuss. Discussion leaders are also listed. The meetings will take place in the Religious Education room at 11:30 after the Sunday coffee hour. All meetings are open to UUFB members and friends.
January 12, 2020: “Why Christianity Must Change or Die” by Bishop John Shelby Spong. Discussion leader: Jay Weidner.
March 8, 2020: “The Simple Faith of Mr. Rogers” by Amy Hollingsworth. Discussion Leader: Ben Sellers.

Habitat Faith Build Events!
UUFB is partnered with other Beaufort area faith groups on the Faith Build house, a project of Habitat for Humanity of the LowCountry. Our volunteers who have gone through the introductory training have already been emailed, but we'd like to highlight an event
open to the general public.
12 noon - Saturday December 14 - The Faith Build house (2523 Mossy Oaks Road in Beaufort) will be dedicated and the keys presented to the Green family. You are encouraged to attend this event if you volunteered on the house, or if you contributed financially. UUFB made a significant contribution in both ways, and it would be fun to have to a good showing.
