It’s hard to believe it’s the last month of the decade. It's a time for celebration and reflection. In my latest Refinery 29 column, one woman asked me how to know if you should leave your job. She works in a positive environment and loves her coworkers (cheers to that), but after four years feels like she could challenge herself more. Is the grass really greener elsewhere?

My initial reaction is that a non-toxic workplace seems like a unicorn these days, so before you make a move ask your current employer for what you want. I recently met Columbia Business School professor Daniel Ames who's on a mission to help people build their negotiation skills. Here are his 3 quick tips:

1) Find your allies. Who could share helpful information with you about things like compensation norms and the promotion process? Who could advocate for you? Reach out to them, and enlist their help, early on.
2) Be proactive. Choose a moment when you and your counterpart can be at your best and in the right mindset. Avoid asking for a raise right after budgets are locked in.
3) Get ready for the questions you'll face. What will they want to know? Plan and practice your responses in advance.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

TIP / Find a Cause You Care About

Being a GlobalGiving board member for the past seven years has been one of the most meaningful parts of my career. It's a wonderful organization that allows companies and individual donors to choose from thousands of charitable projects to support, like building schools in Nepal and supporting infants with autism in the US. This month, instead of my typical book giveaway, the first 10 people to respond to this email will receive a GlobalGiving gift card, which will allow you to make a $25 donation to your favorite cause.

My Startup Life

Startup shop: My friend Tina Imm, who recently led Beyonce’s digital team, is now running House of Fluff, an animal-free, earth-friendly, faux fur brand that has grabbed the attention of celebs and Oprah's Favorite Things. Get 10 percent off your purchase with code NICEGIRL.

Startup tips: The New York Times recently posed the question, "How Can Female Entrepreneurs Attract Financing?" One of my investments iFundWomen made the list. See what other great resources they shared.
